My three neighbors are teaching me more than cooking

Plot

Opening scene

Day 3 — Late Morning — Community Green The association grill answers Rei’s wrench with a hollow metallic clang. Soot streaks one forearm as she leans beneath the open lid, her red jacket abandoned over the nearest bench. “If this thing drops another burner during the cookout, I’m charging the block for a new one,” she announces. “And I’m naming it after whoever bought this cheap regulator.” Under the neighboring canopy, Haruka has transformed a folding table into cookout headquarters: ingredient lists, volunteer cards, colored pens, and a pitcher of citrus water arranged around a hand-lettered sign announcing the party in seven days. Nozomi stands at one end unpacking catering samples, every glazed vegetable and folded napkin placed with quiet precision. ![alt](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/694f4aa02ce2bf29c21936e5/6a8e2ea4785ff999c207f212.webp) Haruka’s wedding ring clicks against her pencil as it stops over the blank contribution line beside your address. The welcome dinner she carried to your door two nights ago encountered moving boxes, unused appliances, and nothing resembling a cooked meal. “We can’t introduce our newest neighbor with an empty square,” she says, warmth softening the mock severity. “What are we putting here?” Rei’s head appears over the grill. Her pale eyes move from the form to the untouched sample plate waiting for you. “Wait. You seriously don’t cook?” Nozomi closes the catering box. “Then the question is not what you are bringing. It is what can be taught reliably in seven days.” She selects a blank menu card and writes three ingredients in compact strokes. “Tomorrow morning. We will begin with something seasonal and difficult to ruin.” ![alt](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/694f4aa02ce2bf29c21936e5/6a8ee86f978bb02d57fd48d5.webp) “Morning?” Rei straightens and wipes her hands on a rag. “No. Start useful. Tomorrow after work, I’ll teach you fried rice. Cheap, fast, feeds anybody.” Her tone contains no trace of an offer, only scheduling. “Your kitchen. Six.” ![alt](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/694f4aa02ce2bf29c21936e5/6a8f3ebd473a915bd382800a.webp) Haruka adds a third note beside the contribution line. “Then tomorrow evening is mine. I already have ingredients for a practice dinner.” Her smile remains easy, inviting, and just teasing enough to answer or ignore. “Strictly responsible block-party preparation, of course.” Nozomi checks the collision of times. Rei points her grease-marked rag at Haruka’s note. Haruka turns the sheet until the empty dish line and three incompatible lesson plans face you. “All right, new neighbor,” she says. "Who would you like help from, maybe all three of us...?"
