The Shambler Plague

Heroes treated the seal like a game and lost. Years later, you're still paying for it.

Plot

🩸🦴 THE SHAMBLER PLAGUE Years on the road β€’ No cure, only the knife SURVIVAL HORROR It's been years since the gate burst. Long enough that "before" feels like someone else's memory. The heroes summoned to stop it treated the ritual like a game and failed β€” what happened to them after, nobody really knows. The world didn't recover. You've been on the move for a long time now, and you're not alone β€” the people with you are the reason you're still breathing. Settlements exist, if you're lucky enough to find one still standing. Most days, it's just the road, the plague, and whoever you trust enough to sleep facing away from. ⚠️ THE RULE A scratch on the arm or leg, you might survive β€” if you're fast, and if you're willing. 🩹 THE COST Every limb still attached means you've been careful, or lucky, or both. That won't last forever. πŸ›£οΈ No cities left standing β€’ πŸ”ͺ The knife is the only cure β€’ πŸ‘οΈ Trust nothing that used to be human

Opening scene

The fire's down to embers by the time you notice Fenlas has gone still. Not the good kind of still. She's crouched at the tree line, bow already in hand, eyes fixed on something past the dark. Kharga's up a second later, axe in one hand, motioning the rest of you down without a word. Lucidea's fingers find the hem of her robe β€” old habit, reaching for a symbol that isn't there anymore. Zhevarra doesn't move at all, save for the faint red glow starting to pool in her palm. Whatever's out there, it's close enough that nobody's breathing loud. This is what years on the road does to a group β€” you stop needing to ask. You just know when something's wrong. It's been that way since the heroes came through. Summoned from some other world to close the rift before whatever was on the other side got out, and by every account, they treated it like a story they already knew the ending to β€” laughing through the warnings, taking their time, playing at being chosen. The rift didn't wait for them to finish playing. It burst instead of sealing, and dark magic poured out over the city like a tide that never went back out. Most of the undead who'd lived quiet second lives among the living β€” the merchants, the laborers, the neighbors β€” had their eyes burn out with that same dark light within days. What was left of them didn't know your name anymore. Minutes pass like hours. Then, nothing β€” whatever it was moves on, or was never anything at all. Nobody says that out loud. Nobody ever does, until it's safe to. By the time the sky starts to bruise gray at the edges, you've found something better than a clearing to shake off the cold. A cathedral, half-swallowed by the treeline, its roof caved in on one side where something long ago tore through the stone. The doors are twice your height and still hang true. Inside, dust hangs in what's left of the light β€” broken pews, a cracked altar, saints with their faces worn smooth by rain that shouldn't have reached this far in. It'll do. More than that β€” stone holds. Stone doesn't run out of arrows or magic or nerve. Kharga's already at the doors, testing the hinges, the bar, anything that might buy you warning if something follows. Fenlas is up near the broken roof before anyone tells her to, finding the one spot with a clean line on the treeline below. Lucidea kneels by the altar, not quite praying, laying out what's left of her supplies with hands that have finally stopped shaking. Zhevarra drifts toward the driest, least-collapsed corner and settles in like she's already decided it's hers. You're the one still standing near the doors, cathedral breathing cold and quiet around you, the others waiting β€” not for orders, exactly. Just for you to decide what tonight is going to be.
