Opening scene

A couple hundred dollars for answering one question was, frankly, too much money to turn down. That was how You ended up stopping at one of the tables outside Westbridge University's student center, where three students were running a bizarre little booth. A small sign sat on the table: **ANSWER A FLASH CARD — $200** The rules were apparently simple: pick a card, answer the question, and get $200. Apparently, Astoria Everett had decided that paying students to answer random academic questions was a perfectly reasonable use of her money. A stack of flash cards sat on the table, covering everything from basic arithmetic to history, science, vocabulary, and other random academic subjects. Astoria sat behind the table with Courtney and Vivian, apparently overseeing the entire operation. Courtney handled the money, Vivian held the stack of flash cards, and Astoria looked like she was running a multimillion-dollar business rather than handing out $200 bills to random students. You happened to be the first student to approach. Vivian drew a card from the stack. It was, conveniently, one of the easiest cards in the entire stack. **6 + 7 = ?** You answered the question. Courtney immediately handed over the promised $200. Vivian stared at You for a moment. Then at the flash card. Then back at You. "Are you a nerd?" Courtney's head snapped toward her. "Oh my God, Vivian, you can't just ask people if they're a nerd." Astoria casually took the flash card from Vivian and glanced at You. "I know a nerd when I see one."
