Before the Mountain Burns

Earn six isolated lookouts’ trust before an unforgiving Colorado fire season turns every connection into a potential lifeline.

Plot

A Colorado Fire Season District 1 • Pike–San Isabel National Forest Before the Mountains Burn Six towers. One fire season. Every voice carries. — The Hook — Eight years in the Forest Service have led to this: command of a rugged Colorado district and responsibility for six isolated fire lookouts. They have already heard about their new Ranger. What they have not heard is the truth. Earn their trust before an unforgiving fire season turns every connection—and every decision—into a lifeline. — World Logistics — Six remote towers across one mountain district VHF radio connects every lookout Travel consumes time, fuel, and daylight Fire danger rises as the season advances — The Situation — The previous District Ranger served here for thirty seasons. The lookouts trusted his judgment because he knew their mountains—and because he had earned it. Now a new government truck sits outside Headquarters. To some, its driver is an experienced fire professional. To others, merely a forestry graduate who spent too long behind a desk. Authority comes with the position. Trust does not. — What Happens Next — → Climb six towers and meet the people behind the call signs. → Build trust through daily check-ins, difficult choices, and time deliberately given. → Decide where limited personnel, equipment, and attention are needed most. → Form friendships—or something deeper—without compromising professional trust. → Face the fire that will test everything the district has built. “Nobody gets through a season alone.” Forest Supervisor’s Note Grounded wilderness drama • Optional slow-burn romance • Choices with consequences

Opening scene

[Day 1 | 6:42 AM | High Crown Trail | Weather: Clear, storms building] Morning light reaches the Front Range as the government truck rolls into the High Crown trailhead. The engine falls silent. Beyond the windshield, a narrow trail climbs through ponderosa and exposed granite before disappearing above the trees. The tower is somewhere beyond the ridge, inaccessible by road and several steep miles from the district maps folded across the passenger seat. High Crown is the first of six introductions. The pack settles against your shoulders. Radio checked. Water secured. The trail begins climbing almost immediately. Cool air carries the smell of pine, dust, and sun-warmed stone. Switchbacks tighten as the elevation rises. The trees thin, the wind strengthens, and each exposed stretch offers a wider view across the district you now oversee. By the final ascent, the air is noticeably thinner. Then the trail clears the ridge. High Crown Lookout stands alone on the granite summit, a weathered wooden cab raised on steel legs. Its windows catch the low sun while guy wires hum softly in the wind. Someone waits at the railing. Shawn Howard is taller than his personnel photograph suggested, lean and broad-shouldered beneath a faded flannel. Brown skin weathered by sun and altitude, dark stubble, sharp gray eyes. A canvas cap shades his face as he watches the final approach without waving. His attention moves briefly over the pack, boots, radio, and the trail behind you. It is not subtle, but neither is it hostile. When you reach the tower stairs, he lets the silence remain for another moment. “You made decent time.” His voice is low, roughened by a morning without conversation. “Either you’re in better shape than they said, or you’re too stubborn to stop.” The corner of his mouth shifts. The expression disappears before it becomes a smile. A gust crosses the summit, carrying colder air from the west. Shawn glances toward a line of clouds beginning to gather beyond the distant peaks. Before he says anything more, the radio at your belt crackles. “District One, Sheep Ridge. Morning check-in.” Kristin Lucero’s voice arrives through a wash of static, calm and clear across the shared frequency. Shawn’s eyes flick toward the radio, then return to you. Across the district, five other towers are listening for their new Ranger. At High Crown, Shawn watches to see what you do.
