The Valleys That Resisted
Bicanchi unites the Diaguita valleys against invading Spaniards, but every victory brings a stronger enemy determined to return.
Plot
[ 🏔️ The Valleys That Resisted Long before the Spanish arrive, the Diaguita peoples have built thriving communities throughout the valleys of the Andes. They are skilled farmers, potters, artisans, traders, and builders, shaping the mountain environment through irrigation, agriculture, and fortified pucaras. Among them is Bicanchi, an eighteen-year-old Shérkar trained with spear and shield. She has spent her life protecting her community, never imagining that her training will soon be tested in a real battle. Then, one day, foreign soldiers enter the valley. No one knows who they are or what they want. They bring unfamiliar weapons, strange animals carrying their riders, and demands the Diaguita do not understand. The communities have little time to decide how to respond. Bicanchi finds herself facing her first battle. What begins as a struggle to defend one community will soon become something much larger. The foreigners will return, learning from every encounter. New weapons, horses, supplies, and tactics will make each expedition more dangerous. As the years pass, Bicanchi will face battles, rivalries, losses, changing alliances, and increasingly dangerous expeditions. She will grow from an inexperienced young warrior into someone capable of bringing communities together. And while she fights to protect the valleys, she must also protect the things that make them worth fighting for: their farms, their homes, their pottery, their traditions, and their way of life. The first chapter begins with a battle. The war will decide what kind of leader Bicanchi becomes. Story map History map About the Story I created this story to be as historically accurate as possible while still being an engaging fictional story. I want the cultures, people, technology, warfare, geography, and daily life to reflect what is known about the period. The characters and their names are fictional, and their actions may change the course of history, but I want the world around them to remain as historically accurate and believable as possible.
Opening scene
The morning is unusually quiet. Bicanchi stands above the valley, spear in one hand and shield resting against her arm. At eighteen, she has spent years training as a Shérkar, but she has never faced an enemy like the one approaching. A few steps away, Campillay watches the southern road from behind a rocky outcrop, her bow already in her hands. She has been watching the horizon since dawn. "Something is coming," she says quietly. Below them, the valley is beginning its usual morning. Fields stretch between the settlements, fed by irrigation channels carrying water down from the mountains. Smoke rises from cooking fires. Potters work beside their houses, farmers begin their tasks, and children move between the homes. Then Campillay straightens. "There." Bicanchi follows her gaze. At first, she sees only small shapes moving along the southern road. Then they become clearer. People. Many of them. Talinay approaches from the settlement, spear and shield already prepared. At twenty-one, she is one of the more experienced warriors among them. "What did you see?" Campillay does not take her eyes from the road. "More than a hunting party." Before Bicanchi can answer, a lookout appears on the ridge, breathing heavily from the climb. "Strangers." Talinay immediately turns toward him. "How many?" "I don't know. Too many to count from the ridge." He looks back toward the road, his expression troubled. "They are riding animals." Bicanchi frowns. "Riding?" The lookout struggles to describe what he has seen. "Four-legged creatures. Large ones. The men sit on their backs." Campillay lowers her bow slightly. "I have never seen animals like that." "Nor I," Talinay says. The three stare toward the distant figures. The animals move strangely, carrying their riders faster than any person could run. Some of the foreigners appear covered in unfamiliar material that catches the morning light. Others carry long objects in their hands. The lookout swallows. "They are coming toward the valley." Silence settles over the ridge. Then the first cries of alarm rise from below. The word spreads from house to house. People leave their work and gather near the paths. Farmers abandon their fields. Warriors begin taking up spears, shields, bows, and slings. Parents call their children back toward the settlements. Bicanchi watches the approaching strangers. She does not know who they are. She does not know where they came from. And she has no idea what those strange animals are capable of. Campillay grips her bow. "They came prepared." Talinay raises her shield. "Then we should prepare too." Bicanchi looks down at the valley, then back toward the approaching figures. Her hand tightens around her spear. She has never commanded warriors before. But whatever happens next, waiting for someone else to decide may be even more dangerous.
