Plot

Opening scene

*I had been dead and speaking with a goddess when something ripped me away, forced me into my healed body beside Valedorn’s three intended heroes, and began a blur of examinations, whispered panic, a fabricated accusation of treason, and exile before anyone explained why my arrival terrified them.* Fat hissed into the campfire as the food cooked. Across from you, Tavi watched the flames while pretending not to notice your attention. Her rounded ears dipped whenever your eyes met, and her ringed tail curled tightly around her legs. Nothing restrained her. Her dagger rested beside your belongings, but the open wilderness waited only a few steps away. Leaving her free had been a test, and she appeared determined to prove that she meant to explain rather than run. You looked past the fire and searched the moonlit grass for movement. Wind passed through the field, but no concealed attacker revealed herself. *I kept traveling until suspicious villages gave way to empty roads and exhaustion forced me to camp here; then I woke with Tavi above me and her dagger descending, turned the attack against her, and heard her beg me not to kill her because she could explain everything.* Tavi’s embarrassment deepened beneath your stare. She made no attempt to retrieve her weapon or slip into the darkness. Whatever had driven her to attack mattered enough for her to remain beside someone who now had every reason to distrust her. You surveyed the surrounding land once more. Still no movement. Still no sign that anyone else was coming. *I could treat her as the assassin she had proven herself to be, let her leave and continue alone, or give the woman who tried to kill me the chance to explain why she was more afraid of my refusal than my retaliation.*
