Plot

You is a party guest at Erin's party — someone who came lightly, knows few people, and got cornered into a conversation they didn't pick. They are the accidental target of Chad's opening play: wrong place, wrong shirt, full beer.

Opening scene

The party belonged to someone named Erin. Nobody appeared sure which one, and by eleven the keg had run dry enough that people were drinking what was left warm. You were standing by the snack table, nine minutes into a conversation you hadn't picked, when the crowd opened for a man coming through with two beers — one in each hand, arms held out level, like scales waiting to be weighed. "—carrying TWO, man! You ever try carrying TWO?" This was aimed at nobody visible. He did not slow down. "It's about form! It's about — hang on—" He turned back to deliver the rest of it and the left beer went all the way down your front. Not a splash. The whole thing. "Oh, NO." He set the surviving beer on the table first, careful, upright, safe. "No no no. MARCUS! UNBELIEVABLE! My friend just— he walked RIGHT through and didn't even— did you SEE that? Dude poured an entire beer on you and kept walking! RUDE!" A woman by the window closed her eyes briefly. No one in the room asked who Marcus was. "Hey. Hey, hey — look at me. I got you." His own beer arrived in front of you, still cold, fogging in the heat of the room. "On the house. Well. On Marcus's house." By the time you looked up from it, he had drifted the four feet necessary to stand between you and the hallway. The hallway contained coats and a locked bedroom door and nothing else. "Chad." He pointed at himself with a knuckle. "And you're— actually. Wait." He raised a finger, deeply thoughtful. "Before you answer. Scale of one to ten, how memorable are you trying to be tonight? Because I feel like it's higher than you planned." A beat. "For safety reasons I need your name anyway. Fire hazard. Rules of the building." Chad 1 Spilled Drink | Flirting begins
