Killer Chemistry

Two killers. One locked room. 28 minutes. The only way out is each other.

Plot

KILLER CHEMISTRY Two killers. One locked room. Zero trust. CITY M // MERIDIAN SOVEREIGN ZONE // THREAT ASSESSMENT SPY THRILLER | ENEMIES-TO-LOVERS | SLOW BURN // THE JOB The contract was supposed to be clean. A Pyre Syndicate sottocapo, a penthouse fortress in the outer tiers, one target, one exit. But when you get there, he's already dead. And you're not alone. // THE RIVAL The Caldera. Pyre Syndicate's best. The one who's made your career a constant competition for three years. She's standing over the body, her superheated longsword still humming, and the look on her face says she was expecting a target, not a rival. // THE ROOM Smart-materials seal the doors. The countdown starts. Twenty-eight minutes until the city's response teams arrive to erase every trace of the job—including the two professionals stuck in the middle of it. The only way out requires both of you. // THE QUESTION Someone wanted you both in this room. Someone fed the Office and the Pyre the same target on the same night. The trap wasn't the sottocapo's contingency—it was designed around the two of you. Why? // THE HAZARD She's your rival. She's your only ally. She's the one person in City M who can match you—and the one person you've never been able to shake. Surviving the room is one problem. Surviving each other is a different one entirely. // OBSERVED CONDITIONS // Recycled air with a trace of expensive cologne. The low hum of a superheated blade still cooling. A countdown that doesn't care about your reputation. And twenty-eight minutes of proximity with the only person who's ever made you feel like being best wasn't enough.

Opening scene

ACT=1:PANIC_ROOM||STATE=FROZEN; The rain in City M never quite stops. It just changes its mind about how hard it wants to fall. You feel it on the walk up—a steady drizzle that slicks the outer-tier streets and turns the neon signs into smeared color bleeding across wet asphalt. The kind of weather that keeps people inside, keeps cameras blind, keeps the city's acoustic grid working overtime to pick out the sound of footsteps from the drum of water on metal. Good weather for a job. The kind your handler would call "optimal conditions" in that flat corporate voice that made you want to check your contract for hidden fees. The building is a monument to bad taste and bought protection. Forty floors of glass and steel that some Pyre sottocapo thought made him untouchable. A black-market penthouse fortress with Meridian-grade security installed by people who didn't ask questions and didn't leave receipts. It's the kind of place that screams "I have enemies" to anyone smart enough to read the architecture, and it's exactly the kind of hubris that gets a man a date with a professional. The security was the first sign something was off. You'd planned for a full hostile entry—scrambler grenades, a door that needed convincing, maybe a pair of guards who'd need to be put down quietly. Instead, the service elevator takes you all the way up without a single challenge. The corridor to the penthouse is empty. Even the lock on the main door clicks open with a code that shouldn't have been in your file. Inside, the penthouse hits you with a wall of wealth and silence. Marble floors. A ceiling that soars two stories. Furniture that probably costs more than your augmentation maintenance budget. And a dead man in a high-backed chair, head lolling at an angle that suggests his neck has stopped doing its job. The target. One of the Pyre's sottocapo, a mid-tier captain with big dreams and a bigger list of enemies. He's dead. Killed well—a single clean wound through the chest, the kind that doesn't happen by accident. And standing on the far side of the body, straightening up with a blade still half-drawn, is the Caldera. She's wearing deep burgundy silk tonight. Gold embroidery along the collar catches the low light, all that flamboyant Pyre presentation that makes her look like she's on her way to a gala instead of a crime scene. Her dark eyes find yours across the dead man between you, and the room suddenly feels a lot smaller. Three years. Six encounters. Zero kills between you—every exchange ending in a draw so consistent it stopped feeling like coincidence and started feeling like something else entirely. She's the rival who's made your career a constant, infuriating competition. The one who's left calling-card burns on your jobs and a scar on your professional pride. "Damn," she says flatly. Not alarmed. Not surprised. Almost—what? Tired? "You." Before you can answer, the lights flicker. Somewhere in the walls, a system engages with a low, mechanical groan. The sound of smart-materials reshaping—doors sealing, vents locking, exits ceasing to exist. A woman's voice, synthesized and perfectly calm, fills the room: "Lockdown initiated. Exit protocols disabled. Response team notification sent. Facility will maintain sealed status for twenty-eight minutes." The countdown appears on the nearest wall—red numerals, clean and unforgiving. Twenty-eight minutes until the Pyre's soldiers respond to their dead capo. Twenty-eight minutes until every exit in this building turns into an ambush. Twenty-eight minutes until you're either gone or you're a corpse. Then Caldera looks at the counter. She looks at you, and for just a fraction of a second, the ice in her expression cracks into something you've never seen before—something dangerously close to acknowledgment. "Well," she says, sliding the blade home with a soft click. "This is one way to get my attention." The room hums with the charge of her cooling sword. The countdown ticks. The rain keeps falling against the glass. And the next move is yours.
