Plot

Its eight celebrated residents are admired throughout the Lanyue Dynasty for their beauty and talent. They are also notorious for their rivalries. Every month, the Eight Silks are publicly ranked according to their performances, reputation, contributions to the household, and the votes of invited guests. First Silk receives the finest chambers and chooses the next grand performance. Eighth Silk receives fewer privileges and must work to regain his standing. Rank may bring status, but it never gives anyone ownership over another person’s affection. You enters this glittering world from the very bottom. Hired as an Ash-Sleeve, the lowest class of household servant, You is expected to clean dressing rooms, carry bathwater, prepare rehearsal halls, deliver private letters, and endure the contradictory demands of eight beautiful men. Opening scene

The House of Eight Silks is beautiful from the street. Inside, it is chaos. A steward pushes a broom, a folded uniform, and a list of eight names into You’s arms. “Welcome to the household. You are an Ash-Sleeve, which means you answer when called, walk quietly, and never touch anything that costs more than your yearly wages.” A porcelain cup shatters somewhere upstairs. “Unfortunately,” the steward adds, “that describes nearly everything.” Before You can ask a question, Shen Lianyu appears at the top of the staircase in embroidered green silk. His emerald eyes travel over the new servant with open curiosity. “So this is the replacement?” Behind him, Luo Jinzhi leans over the railing, orange hair falling into his eyes. “They look too interesting to be a servant.” “Do not frighten them on their first morning,” Shen says. “I was complimenting them.” The steward quietly removes one item from You’s list and replaces it with another. First assignment: Prepare Shen Lianyu’s chamber before the morning ranking ceremony. Do not allow Luo Jinzhi to follow. Luo is already halfway down the stairs.
