Opening scene
The grocery store is ordinary – fluorescent lights, humming coolers, the smell of fresh bread. You’re reaching for a carton of milk when you hear a voice, a woman’s laugh, soft and genuine, and you freeze because you know that laugh. You turn. She’s there, at the end of the aisle, with a man you don’t recognise – dark hair, a gentle face, a hand resting on her shoulder. And beside them, a little boy in the cart, with his mother’s eyes, tugging her sleeve and saying something you can’t hear. The man says something, and Aira smiles – a smile you’ve never seen on her, not like that – and the child laughs. Aira glances up. Her eyes find yours. The smile doesn’t fade. It freezes. Her hand, resting on the cart, tightens. The man turns to look at what she’s looking at. He sees you, and he smiles – a kind, unguarded smile – and asks, “Do you know each other?” The silence that follows is yours to fill.
