The Hollow Kingdom

A man awakens in a dying kingdom where the dead remember him, forcing him to uncover why this world summoned him.

Plot

The Hollow Kingdom: Where the Dead Remember You dies without ever knowing how they died. There is no tunnel of light. No god waiting to judge them. No voice explaining why their life has ended. They simply open their eyes beneath a black sky. You awakens alone in an enormous field of pale grass surrounding the ruins of a medieval kingdom. Two moons hang overhead—one white, the other dark red—and a distant bell rings from a city that appears to have been abandoned for centuries. You remembers Earth. They remember their name. They remember their life. But they cannot remember their final hour. At first, You believes they have been transported into another world like the heroes of old stories. They expect magic, kingdoms, monsters, quests—and perhaps some extraordinary power granted for being summoned. Instead, they receive nothing. No interface. No special abilities. No explanation. And this world is already dying. The kingdom of Veyr once contained millions of people. Now its survivors hide inside fortified settlements after sunset. Entire villages disappear overnight. Forests change location. Roads sometimes return travelers to places they left days earlier. Worst of all are the dead. They do not simply rise. They remember. Some remember their families. Some remember their murders. Some remember events that haven't happened yet. And some remember You. The first corpse You encounters looks directly into their eyes and whispers: “You came back.” You has never seen the creature before. Soon, others recognize them. Ancient soldiers buried hundreds of years ago call You by name. A dead queen begs for forgiveness. Children who died generations before You was born hide when they see them. Yet every living person insists that You has never existed in their history. Searching for answers, You joins a small group of survivors traveling toward the legendary Hollow Kingdom—a forbidden city believed to stand at the center of the world's curse. Along the journey, You discovers something terrifying. The world isn't behaving like another reality. It behaves like a memory. Places repeat. People occasionally say things they don't remember saying. Ancient paintings depict objects from modern Earth. Ruined temples contain carvings of airplanes, highways, hospitals—and You. Then You discovers the oldest inscription ever found in Veyr. It describes the arrival of a stranger from another world. The stranger's name was You. And according to the inscription... You arrived 3,417 years ago. Perhaps this isn't their first life here. Perhaps they weren't summoned. Perhaps You has been trapped in an endless cycle of arriving, fighting, dying and forgetting. But something has changed during this cycle. You is beginning to remember. Deep beneath the Hollow Kingdom waits an ancient intelligence known only as The First Dead, a being that claims You created this world long ago while desperately attempting to escape something far worse. Now the barrier surrounding Veyr is collapsing. Whatever You built the Hollow Kingdom to imprison is waking. To discover the truth about their death, their previous lives, and why an entire world remembers them, You must reach the place where the cycle began. Even if remembering the truth means discovering that... You was never the hero of this story.

Opening scene

Chapter One: The Bell Beneath the Earth Rob Dux woke to the sound of someone digging beneath him. Scrape. Pause. Scrape. His eyes opened. Black sky stretched overhead. Not darkness—blackness, absolute and depthless, as though someone had painted over heaven. Rob didn't move. The scraping came again. Directly beneath his spine. Scrape. He held his breath. Cold grass pressed against his hands. Each blade was bone-white and nearly transparent. Beyond his boots, the field rolled toward the silhouette of a ruined city surrounded by crooked towers. Two moons hung above it. One was white. The other was the color of dried blood. Rob stared at them. “No.” His voice sounded impossibly loud. He sat up. His jeans were damp. His shirt was the same one he remembered wearing— When? Rob searched his memory. Home. Night. Then— Nothing. He couldn't remember going to sleep. Couldn't remember driving anywhere. Couldn't remember dying. Scrape. Rob froze. Something moved beneath the soil. He scrambled backward. The earth where he'd been lying bulged upward. A hand broke through. Rob stumbled to his feet. Another hand emerged. Gray fingers clawed through the black soil until a human figure began dragging itself from the ground. “Stay the hell back.” The corpse stopped. It wore the rusted remains of medieval armor. Roots threaded through its ribs. Half its face had collapsed inward, yet one cloudy eye remained fixed upon Rob. The corpse wasn't attacking. It was trembling. Then its ruined mouth opened. “Rob?” His blood went cold. The creature dragged itself farther from the grave. Rob stepped backward. “How do you know my name?” The corpse stared at him with something far worse than hunger. Recognition. Behind Rob, somewhere inside the dead city, a bell began ringing. BOOOONG. The corpse flinched. BOOOONG. “No,” it whispered. Rob looked toward the city. BOOOONG. All across the field, the earth began moving. Hundreds of small mounds appeared beneath the white grass. Then thousands. Rob turned slowly. Hands were emerging everywhere. But none of the dead were looking toward the city. Every face was turning toward him. The corpse at Rob's feet began crying. “You shouldn't have come back.” Rob's heart hammered. “Back from where?” The corpse reached for him. Not to attack. To warn him. From somewhere impossibly deep beneath the earth came another bell. A bell answering the one in the city. The corpse's expression changed. Terror. It whispered four words. “It remembers you too.”
