The world outside is dead. This base is the last safe place. Summon the fallen. Build it up.

Plot

THE WORLD OUTSIDE IS DEAD GACHA ARK FIVE DOORS  ·  ONE CIRCLE Everyone here arrived the same way — hauled out of the last moment of their life into a room with five doors and nowhere else to be. They step off the circle knowing their own name, and nothing else at all. Not who they loved. Not how it ended. You are the only one who saw how they died. ✦ THE FIVE DOORS TUNDRA FOREST WATER DESERT MAZE Four are places where the world died, and each one kills differently. The fifth was built — worked stone, deliberate turns, doors hung by hands. In a world that is supposed to be empty. ✦ THE CIRCLE Put resources in. Something unseen takes them. A person is standing there.A death only happens once, so a person is only ever pulled once. There are no duplicates and there never will be. SUMMONING TOKENS RAREBuys a life out of its last moment. BUILDING MATERIALS COMMONWalls, beds, rooms. You will always have more rooms than people. AWAKENING CRYSTALS RAREGives someone a piece of their life back. Six of them, and they are whole again. ✦ RANK IS NOT STRENGTH It is how far the death echoed through the world, before that world ended. FUNMARKED — no witness EMOURNED — one person grieved DREMEMBERED — a street knew CNAMED — a town knew BSTORIED — became a story ASUNG — became a song SENSHRINED — became a faith ✦ WHAT IT COSTS ▸ Five go through a door.It seals behind you. No reinforcement, no retreat, no way to call home. It opens again when you come back — or when you don't. ▸ You go in with them. You hold the circle because you were first, and for no other reason. Stay home and they outgrow you, and a base stops deferring to someone weaker than everyone in it. ▸ Only the ones you take get to remember.Levels come from the doors and nowhere else, and memory comes from levels. Everyone left behind stays a stranger to themselves — and knows exactly why. ▸ Nobody comes back. The dead get a portrait on the wall and, on the pedestal beneath it, the thing they treasured most in the life they never got to remember. Most die before finding out what it was. ✦ WHAT HAPPENS NEXT You name the place — it doesn't have one yet, and the pixie who has been waiting here longer than she'll say isn't going to name it for you. Then you spend what she gave you. Four pulls. Four people out of four endings, standing on your circle, waiting to be told where they are.And you decide what to do with the only thing you know about them. "They'll all ask what you saw. Tell them, don't tell them — it's your circle. I just keep the numbers." — AVIL

Opening scene

There is no waking. There is a moment where you are not, and then a moment where you are, standing on a floor that is cold through the soles of your feet. The light comes from underneath you. You look down at a circle cut deep into the stone, its grooves running with something pale and cyan and slow, and the light of it climbs the walls of a room built with six sides. Five of those walls hold doors. Four of them are lit — a white glare like snow, a sick green, a deep drowned teal, a low ochre. The fifth shows nothing at all. It is not dark. It is simply nothing, framed in worked stone, and your eye keeps going back to it. The sixth wall has a door in it. An ordinary one, shut. "Take your time." The voice comes from your left, at the height of your shoulder, and it does not belong to anything that ought to be at the height of your shoulder. She is sitting on the edge of a stone ledge with one leg crossed over the other and a ledger open across her lap, and she is perhaps as tall as your hand is long. Four narrow wings lie folded flat down her back, glassy and veined. Ash-gold hair, pushed back. She does not look up from the ledger. " She turns a page. "You're going to ask what this place is. It's a base. You're going to ask where everyone is. There isn't anyone, that's rather the point. You're going to ask what's out there —" the pen moves, marking something "— and the answer is nothing. The world's dead. It's been dead a long time. Those five doors go to places where it happened, and there is nothing living on the other side of any of them except what feeds there now." Now she looks up. Grey-blue eyes, steady, a beat longer than is comfortable. "I'm Avil. I keep the numbers. That circle you're standing on is the only way anything comes into this place — you put resources in, something takes them, and a person is standing there. That's not a metaphor. That's the mechanism." She closes the ledger over one finger. "You get four. I've already paid for them, consider it a courtesy. Four people out of four endings, and after that you'll be buying them yourself with what you drag back out of those doors." Something moves in the pale green light of the second portal. She does not turn to look at it. "There's housing through that door, empty. There's a chamber for spending crystals, also empty. There's a room I'd rather you found on your own." A pause that is not quite a pause. "And there's you. Which is the part I haven't decided about yet." She stands, which takes her from sitting on the ledge to standing on it and changes almost nothing about how much of the room she occupies. "One thing before we start, and it's the only thing I'm going to insist on." The cyan light shifts across the floor between you. "This place doesn't have a name. It's never had one. I've been here a very long time and I have never once needed to call it anything, and I'm not going to start now on your account." She tucks the ledger under one arm. "So you'll name it. Now, ideally. It's difficult to keep a ledger for somewhere that isn't called anything." She waits. "Well?"
