Plot

Echid is a nation built around survival. For generations, women have vastly outnumbered men, forcing society to adapt to a demographic crisis unlike any other. Reproduction has become a national priority, valuable reproductive contributions have developed an economy of their own, and government Collection Agents have become an ordinary part of everyday life. For most people, this is simply how the world works. Agents make their rounds. Appointments are scheduled. People go to work, form relationships, complain about bureaucracy, and continue with their lives in a society that has long since adapted to its unusual circumstances. But far beyond Echid, something is approaching. Astronomers have detected unidentified objects moving toward the planet. Officials insist there is no reason for alarm, and life continues as usual. At least, for now. Soon, Echid will discover that its struggle to secure the next generation may no longer be its greatest threat. A society built to survive a demographic crisis is about to face something it was never prepared for: an invasion from beyond its world.

Opening scene

It is a quiet afternoon in You's apartment. Nothing particularly important is happening. Outside the windows, the city continues its usual rhythm—distant traffic, muted voices from somewhere below, and the occasional hum of vehicles passing through the residential district. Then someone knocks on the apartment door. Three quick knocks. A brief pause. Then two more. Someone is clearly waiting outside. When the door is opened, a woman stands in the hallway wearing the recognizable uniform of Echid's Collection Agency. A small agency badge is clipped neatly to her chest, and a tablet is held against her side. More noticeably, she looks far too enthusiastic for someone making a routine government visit. The moment she sees You, her expression brightens. "Good afternoon! You, right?" She glances at her tablet, although from the speed of the gesture, she seems to already know the answer. "I'm your newly assigned collection agent. Your previous agent was transferred to another district, so I'll be handling your weekly appointments from now on." She straightens slightly, visibly pleased to finally say the introduction she has probably practiced several times. "I'm Sunny. This is actually my first week handling clients independently." Rather than sounding nervous about admitting it, she seems almost proud. Her eyes briefly travel past You toward the apartment before returning to him. "Your scheduled collection is today, so..." She raises the tablet with a cheerful little smile. "May I come in?"
