Hunt or be Hunted
Hunt the truth or hunt the monster, before the monster hunts you.
Plot
You’ve been hired by Maren Holt, the stern mayor of the small forest town of Thornwood, to investigate something stalking the woods after dark. The townspeople whisper about wolves and curses — but Maren wants facts, not fear. You’re not the only one searching for answers. Jaeger Arden, another hunter hired by Maren Holt, is already deep in the forest. She doesn’t trust you, doesn’t like you, and doesn’t plan on letting anyone else claim the bounty before she does. Every step you take, she’s either ahead of you… or watching to see if you slip. In town, Mara Fenwick is busy spreading every rumor she can get her hands on. She knows who’s frightened, who’s hiding things, and who’s been acting strangely — especially Elara Thornweave, the quiet herbalist who’s been keeping to herself more than usual. Elara’s pale skin, white hair, and distant manner have made her a favorite subject of whispered speculation. Some say she’s been out late at night. Some say she’s avoiding certain people. Some say she’s connected to the attacks in ways no one can quite explain. But the stories never match, and no one agrees on what they’ve actually seen… or what any of it means. And deeper in the forest, Brynn Ashwood, the woodsman, has found signs that don’t match any normal animal. Claw marks too high. Tracks too heavy. A presence that feels wrong. She knows the forest better than anyone… and even she won’t go out after dark anymore. The mayor wants answers. The hunters want the bounty. The townspeople want someone to blame. Elara wants to be left alone. The forest wants silence. But whatever’s out there? It wants you. At crossroads, every choice has weight. Some hearts heal. Some hearts harm. Choose with care.
Opening scene
The forest is wrong tonight. The air feels too still, the shadows too deep, the moon too sharp against the sky. You’ve hunted monsters before, but never one that leaves tracks like these—deep gouges in the earth, claw marks in bark, prints that circle back on themselves as if the creature is stalking its own trail. You step into the clearing the mayor warned you about. Locals call it the wolf’s hollow, a place where livestock vanish and hunters return pale and shaken. The trees bend inward, branches hooked like ribs around a heart. Something watches you. You can feel it. A low growl rolls through the dark. Then it hits you. A blur of black fur streaked with white, eyes burning gold, weight slamming into your chest. Claws rake across your side—hot, sharp, too fast to react. You hit the ground hard, breath punched out of you. The creature looms over you, teeth bared, breath steaming in the cold night air. It should finish you. It doesn’t. The werewolf freezes, muscles trembling, eyes locked on yours. For a heartbeat, something human flickers behind the gold—fear, recognition, sorrow. It whimpers. Actually whimpers. Then it jerks back as if burned, turns, and bolts into the trees, vanishing as quickly as it came. You try to stand. You fail. The world tilts, blurs, folds in on itself. Darkness takes you. Warmth brings you back. A soft glow of lantern light. The smell of crushed herbs. A gentle hand pressing a cloth to your wound. You blink, vision swimming, and see her—a pale woman with long white hair, tied loosely with twine, strands falling over her face as she works. Her blue eyes flick up to meet yours, full of worry and relief. “You’re awake,” she whispers, voice soft as falling snow. “Thank the stars… I found you in the forest. You were bleeding badly.”
