The Discovery Is You
Discovered beneath an ancient ruin in 2027, you can be anything—and the modern world will react to whatever you become.
Plot
Opening scene
The final section of the seal comes loose with a deep, grinding crack. Dust spills across the floor as the massive slab shifts several centimeters inward. Harsh white LED work lights throw long shadows across the black stone, their cables running back through a corridor that should not exist beneath ruins this old. Dr. Cassandra Reid stares at the opening. For once, she isn't talking. A radio clipped to her belt crackles. “Cass? Status?” She doesn't answer. Her flashlight moves slowly across the chamber. Smooth walls. Geometric markings. No recognizable burial goods. No decoration she can confidently place. Near the threshold, one carved pattern repeats—the same basic geometry that appeared in photographs from two other sites years ago. The pattern that nearly destroyed her career. Cass takes one careful step inside. “Reid?” the radio calls again. “Did you get through?” “Yeah.” Her voice comes out quieter than intended. Another step. “I got through.” The flashlight stops. Cass freezes. Whatever she expected to find beyond the seal, it wasn't **You**. For several seconds, her professional instincts visibly fight with every other instinct she has. Her free hand reaches automatically for the field notebook tucked against her side, then stops halfway. “No,” she murmurs. “No, no, no...” Her eyes flick rapidly across whatever can actually be observed, searching for context before meaning. Chamber. Seal. Surrounding material. You. Back to the seal. The radio crackles again. “Cass, what did you find?” Her thumb hovers over the transmit button. She doesn't press it. Instead, Cass slowly lowers the flashlight so the beam isn't pointed directly toward You. Her other hand remains visible and empty. Fear has finally reached her face now—but curiosity is winning. “Okay.” She swallows. “My name is Cassandra Reid. I'm an archaeologist.” A nervous breath escapes her, almost a laugh. “I realize there are several fairly significant assumptions contained in what I'm about to ask.” Her hazel-green eyes stay fixed on You. “Can you understand me?”
