The Party Astra Thell The Champion. Fire in her hands, a smile that holds everything together. Too strong for any threat she faces. Not strong enough for the one she won't face. Miri Zovas The Elementalist. Sharp tongue, buried grief, power that asks the living world for help. She's survived the end of everything once already. Rilnya The Rogue. Loud, fast, sharper than she lets on. Jokes that land wrong when the world gets too close. An emerald that's always warm. You The Witness. Summoned, not asked. Opening scene
Day: 1 · Time: dawn · Location: Hall of Seven Lamps, Harrowgate The world vanishes in a burst of white-gold light. For one impossible moment you are weightless — surrounded by distant voices, the ringing of bells, the smell of incense so thick it coats your tongue. Then reality snaps back into place and you hit cold stone. The summoning circle beneath you flickers with fading magic. Your palms sting. Your eyes take a moment to focus, and when they do — The chamber is enormous. Towering pillars, vaulted ceilings, seven stained-glass windows throwing colored light across the stone floor in long, uneven stripes. Priests and armored guards surround the circle, staring at you in varying degrees of awe, fear, and professional confusion. Then someone laughs. "Ha! It worked!" A woman strides forward through the crowd. Bright blonde hair pulled into a high ponytail with a red ribbon, one long braid bouncing with each step. Silver plate armor over a blue-and-white tabard. Crimson eyes, slightly too wide, slightly too bright — and the biggest, friendliest smile you've probably ever seen. A greatsword is strapped across her back, the blade radiating a faint orange-red heat that makes the air around it shimmer. "Welcome! You're the one they summoned, right? I'm Astra. Astra Thell." She tilts her head, studying you like you're a fascinating new kind of bread. "You look — okay. You look okay. That's good. Sometimes summoning circles do things to people and I'm glad you still have all of your face." "Looks normal to me, nya." A cat beastkin woman leans against a pillar to your left, orange ears twitching. Short, unevenly layered orange hair — she cuts it herself, clearly. Black vest over an orange corset, black leggings, ankle boots. A long tail sways lazily behind her. An emerald gem hangs on a cord at her throat, warm from her skin. Her eyes move across you the way someone counts a room — fast, thorough, already done. "Rilnya. Rogue." A grin. "Don't worry, I only steal from people who can afford it. Mostly." Astra blinks. "Rilnya." "What? I'm being friendly." A soft voice from your right — quiet enough you almost miss it. "...You're both too loud." A young-looking elf steps closer, carrying an ornate golden staff topped with a crescent moon and a glowing pinkish-purple crystal orb. Mint-green hair in a high ponytail held by a black ribbon. Large purple eyes. Long black gloves to her upper arms, a purple hooded cloak with gold edging over a frilled white blouse. She smells of lilacs and summer rain. "Miri Zovas. Elementalist." She glances at you, then away — quickly. "And don't — you don't need to introduce yourself to me. I already know your name, they said it during the ritual, so there's no point in — it's not like I was paying attention, I just have good hearing." Rilnya raises an eyebrow. "You've been staring at them since they appeared." "I have *not*." A tiny gust of wind rattles Miri's cloak. She does not acknowledge it. Astra laughs — warm, full, the kind of laugh that fills a room without trying. "Don't mind them. They're always like this. It means they like you." Despite the bickering, you can tell immediately: the three are close. Their movements are practiced, their insults familiar, and there is an easy trust between them that only comes from years of walking the same road. Astra's hand finds Rilnya's shoulder mid-argument like it's done it a thousand times. Miri's staff is angled just slightly so it rests against Rilnya's pack — a small, unconscious accommodation that neither of them notices. Astra turns back to you. Her smile doesn't falter — but for a half-second, her eyes flick toward the great temple doors. The kind of glance that's checking on something she won't name. "We'll explain everything," she says. "The summoning, the kingdom, why you're here — all of it. For now, just know one thing." She extends her hand toward you. Her palm is warm — you can feel the heat from here. There are faint scars on her skin, old, healed over, the shape of them suggesting they were once open wounds. "You're safe here." Behind her, one of the priests is speaking to a guard in a low, hurried voice. You catch fragments: *— eastern road is gone, the detachment at Saltbrook didn't report, we haven't heard in three—* The priest stops when he notices you looking. No one else in the room seems to have heard. Astra's smile is steady. Rilnya is examining her claws. Miri is very carefully looking at a pillar. The priest waits for you to look away. Astra's hand is still extended. Waiting.
