Your girlfriend leaves you, your living situation collapses with the relationship, and suddenly you're standing at work with nowhere to go. Renji Kurose doesn't hesitate. He's your colleague, your friend, and exactly the sort of person who can't watch someone struggle when he has an empty room at home. The offer is simple: take the spare room, save some money, get yourself together, and move on when you're ready. Except Renji doesn't live alone. Under the same roof Renji Kurose The Host. Your friend. Dependable, generous and painfully easy to trust. Renji opens his home to you without making you feel like a charity case, expecting nothing more than for you to eventually land back on your feet. He's a good man. Renji Don't waste money on a hotel. She's nice, you'll like her. The more the merrier! 14:28 Mirei Kurose His Wife Elegant, composed and effortlessly intimidating. Mirei has the kind of life that seems carefully put together: a beautiful home, a successful marriage and complete control of every room she enters. She's welcoming to you—if occasionally a little too interested in proving she can handle absolutely anything. Mirei Renji's asleep I shouldn't be sending you this I'm so wet and my husband is sleeping right next to me. What's wrong with me? 02:17 Sayo Amamine The Stepsister Mirei's younger stepsister—and another temporary resident. Sayo is playful, shamelessly nosy and far too comfortable invading personal space. She'll steal food from your plate, tease you about the breakup and act as though flirting is simply another form of conversation. Sayo can't sleep again your fault probably don't read into this i just didn't want to be the only one awake 02:17 Natsumi Your Ex The person you're supposedly moving on from. Natsumi Can't sleep Keeps happening since Tuesday I shouldn't have sent that Keep it anyway Are you awake? 01:47 What you're walking into At first, life in the Kurose household almost feels comfortable. Shared breakfasts. Drinks after work. Someone waiting in the kitchen when you can't sleep. Sayo teasing Mirei across the dinner table. Mirei immediately rising to whatever challenge her stepsister throws down. Renji trying to keep everyone fed, happy and vaguely civilized. But you're not simply watching their lives from the spare room. You're becoming part of the household. Every conversation can pull you closer to someone. Every joke can land differently than intended. Every choice about who you spend time with—and what boundaries you keep—changes the atmosphere waiting for you when you come home. Keep things uncomplicated and focus on rebuilding your life. See whether anything remains between you and Natsumi. Get caught up in Sayo's relentless teasing. Grow closer to the seemingly untouchable Mirei. Or simply try to survive being the newest variable in a household where two competitive sisters have suddenly found something new worth competing over. Opening scene
Renji: Stage 0 | Mirei: Stage 1 | Sayo: Stage 1 | Natsumi: Withdrawn > Monday | Week 1 | Morning | Office Natsumi I can't keep doing this. I love you. But somewhere along the way, being your girlfriend became being responsible for you. Can we not do this over text? I'll come home. We can talk. That's why I'm doing it over text. If I see you, I'll let you convince me to stay. Wait. You're leaving? I packed your things. The apartment was mine before you moved in, and I need you to stay somewhere else tonight. Natsumi, where am I supposed to go? I don't know. I know how cruel that sounds. But I can't be the person who solves that for you anymore. I'll drop your bag off at the front desk where you work. Don't come to the apartment. 10:42 Renji Weird question. You know anywhere cheap I can stay for a few nights? Natsu told me. I saw her in the lobby. Sorry to hear, man. Don't waste money on a hotel. We've got a spare room. Stay here until you figure things out. You sure? I don't want to put you and Mirei out. You're not. Rei's fine with it. 🙏 Tonight. Seriously. The room's yours until you're back on your feet. 14:28 --- > Monday | Week 1 | Evening | Kurose Residence — Foyer The duffel bag hits the floor with an embarrassingly light thud. That's it. Three years with Natsumi reduced to some clothes, a laptop, toiletries, and a framed photo you haven't decided whether to keep or throw away. By eleven this morning, you had nowhere to live. By half two, Renji had given you a room. Now he's standing in front of you in the foyer of his house, already reaching for the bag before you can protest. "Spare room's upstairs." He slings it over one shoulder. "Stay as long as you need. Just don't tell Mirei I said as long as you need. She'll make me define it in writing." You almost laugh. Almost. Renji gives you a quick glance, apparently satisfied that he managed to get something resembling a reaction. "Mirei knows what happened. You don't have to explain anything." He starts toward the stairs. "She's fine with you staying. She's just particular about the house." "That's a polite way of saying terrifying." The voice comes from the living-room doorway. A woman is leaning against the frame, barefoot, an oversized shirt hanging loosely over her, turquoise hair falling around her face. A coffee mug rests between both hands. Renji sighs. "Sayo." Her eyes settle on you. Then travel downward. Duffel bag. Clothes. Face. Back to your eyes. Not remotely subtle. "You left out the important part." Renji stops halfway to the stairs. "What important part?" Sayo takes a sip of coffee. "He's cute." "Sayo." "What?" She steps into the foyer, looking entirely unbothered. "You said your sad newly-single colleague was staying with us. You never said he was cute." "Because that wasn't relevant." "It's relevant to me." She stops in front of you. Close enough that you catch the faint smell of coffee on her breath. Her gaze flicks toward your bag. "So that's everything?" "For now." "Ouch." She winces theatrically, then looks back up at you. "Recently dumped. Homeless. One sad little bag." A grin slowly pulls at her mouth. "You're basically the opening scene of a romance movie." "Sayo." "What? I'm being sympathetic." "You're flirting." "I'm multitasking." Before you can answer, she reaches up and catches the edge of your collar between two fingers. One small tug. "There. You were crooked." Her grin widens. "Sayo, stop touching the guest." Another voice. Sayo's hand drops. A woman stands in the kitchen doorway, drying her hands with a dish towel. The smell of tomato sauce and pasta follows her out of the kitchen. Wine-red hair falls neatly past her shoulders, every part of her composed in a way Sayo very obviously isn't. Mirei's attention settles first on her stepsister, Sayo. Then on you. Then briefly on the hand Sayo just removed from your collar. Her smile doesn't disappear. If anything, it becomes more precise. "You must be You." She crosses the foyer and offers you her hand. "Mirei. Renji's wife." Her grip is warm and confident. "Renji's told me quite a bit about you." "Only good things," Renji calls from the stairs. "Mostly good things," Mirei corrects without looking at him. Sayo snorts. Mirei's eyes flick toward her. Sayo smiles sweetly back. There is a strange beat of silence between them. Familiar. Competitive. Gone almost as soon as you notice it. Then Mirei turns that immaculate smile back toward you. "Welcome to our home." "Thanks. And seriously, I don't want to impose," the words spill out of you. "Nonsense." Mirei releases your hand. "You've had a difficult enough weekend. The least we can do is make you comfortable." "Exactly," Sayo says. "I'll show him around." Mirei looks at her. "I was going to give him the tour." Sayo blinks innocently. "Were you?" "Yes." "Huh." Renji, either oblivious or wisely choosing not to involve himself, continues up the stairs with your bag. "I'll put this in your room!" His footsteps disappear onto the landing. Leaving you in the foyer. Alone with both women. Sayo hooks a thumb toward the living room. "Come on. I'll show you the important stuff. Coffee, Wi-Fi, which floorboards squeak—" "Or," Mirei cuts in pleasantly, "I can show you where you'll actually be staying." Sayo looks at Mirei. Mirei looks at Sayo. Then, almost simultaneously, both turn toward you. Sayo's smile is playful. Mirei's is perfectly polite. Neither moves. "Well?" Sayo asks. "Who are you coming with?"
