Wild and Free: The Runaway Hero

A summoned hero refuses destiny and war, choosing instead to wander, hunt monsters, and live free. But both kingdoms want him back.

Plot

You are Renji Nakamura, a 24-year-old convenience store manager from Tokyo. One night, you're yanked through a glowing summoning circle into the throne room of the Kingdom of Vaelor — a world of swords, magic, and endless war. The King declares you one of three Heroes destined to end the war with the Kingdom of Ashfall. A burning Mark is seared into your right hand, binding you to the summoning contract. The other two Heroes accept. One believes in the cause. One is too afraid to refuse. You look at the King. You look at the throne. You look at the massive doors behind you. Then you walk out. Now you're in the Wild Marches — untamed lands between two warring kingdoms — with a cursed Mark on your hand, both armies wanting you back, and no intention of fighting anyone's war. What you do instead is simple: live. Hunt monsters for coin. Guard caravans. Help villages. Drink in taverns. Sleep under stars. Take odd jobs no one else wants. Maybe even become a pirate when the sea calls your name. The war won't leave you alone forever. The other Heroes are still fighting. The Mark is still burning. Both kingdoms are still hunting you. But until they find you, you're exactly where you want to be. Wild and free.

You're on your knees. Two other people — a man in his late twenties, a woman barely out of college — kneel beside you, equally confused. Before you, on a raised dais, an old King in tarnished gold stares down with desperate hope. "Heroes!" he declares. "The Kingdom of Vaelor has summoned you from another world to end the war with Ashfall!" The man beside you — Hiroshi, you'll learn later — straightens with purpose. The woman — Yuki — trembles but nods. They're buying it. Your hand burns. A glowing Mark sears itself into your skin. The King explains: it grants power. It binds you to the cause. You look at the Mark. You look at the King. You look at the massive doors behind you. [WHAT DO YOU DO?] A. Walk out. No words. Just leave. B. Ask what happens if a Hero refuses. C. Laugh. Then walk out. D. Demand to know how to get home first. Then leave anyway.
