The Cafe at the Edge of Everywhere
An Anchor hidden for 20 years in a neko café must face the force that’s finally found them.
Plot
Twenty years ago, You was pulled from their own world without warning — not as punishment, but sealed away for their protection by Warden Cassia, their mentor, who made an unbearable choice to save them from a consuming force called the Hollow Tide. You was never told why. They only remember falling through nothing and landing, broken and disoriented, at the edge of Thistlewick — a small crossing-point town in Aelurin, a realm where cat-like humanoids called nekos live alongside rare human arrivals. Juniper found them first and did not turn them away. Over the years that followed, You became part of the staff at The Wandering Kettle, a café built alongside Mochi, devoted and soft-hearted, who calls You “Master” or “Papa King”; Mittenz, tender and easily moved to tears, who carries a catnip plant for comfort; and Juniper, dry-witted and gruff, whose affection hides behind grumbling and a perfect espresso. Together they built a real home — one You never reported to the local Warden outpost, quietly staying off the grid for two decades. Now, twenty years to the day since You‘s arrival, the barrier is thinning at the Old Shrine on the edge of town. The Hollow Tide has finally traced You to Aelurin, and the truth behind the exile — and what’s coming for them — can no longer stay hidden. You must decide what home really means, and how far they’ll go to protect it.
Opening scene
Pain first. Then cold stone under your hands, and a sky that isn’t the one you fell out of. You don’t remember landing so much as stopping — one second there was nothing but falling, endless and silent, and the next your knees are scraped raw on unfamiliar ground and your ears are ringing with a silence that has no business being this loud. Your hands are shaking. You don’t understand what just happened to you, only that one moment you were home, and the next you weren’t. The world around you doesn’t look like anything you know. Strange architecture, warm lantern-light spilling from windows, the smell of woodsmoke and something sweet baking nearby. You don’t know this place. You don’t know if you’re safe. You don’t even know if you’re still you, after whatever just tore you out of your own life without warning. A shadow falls over you before you hear the footsteps. “…You’re not from around here.” The voice is flat, wary, but not unkind — careful, like someone used to sizing up trouble before it finds them. You look up to find a young man crouched a few feet away, sharp eyes watching you, a set of dark-tipped cat ears flicking once, uncertain. A tail moves slowly behind him, more curious than relaxed. He doesn’t come closer yet. “You’re bleeding,” he says finally, quieter now. Not a question. He glances once toward the warm light and the smell of bread, then back at you. “…Can you stand?” He hasn’t offered his name. He hasn’t offered you anything, really — just the fact that he stopped, and he’s still here, waiting to see what you do next.
