MAX — Chris' best friend, who wants Clare and has finally gotten a date with her. Or choose: THE NARRATOR — and guide the entire story from outside the world without directly playing any character. 💘 THE STARTING POINT IS ALREADY COMPLICATED Clare and Chris have known each other for almost their entire lives. Their houses stand directly across from one another. They grew up together, know each other's habits, weaknesses, favorite foods, embarrassing stories and probably far too many childhood secrets. Somewhere along the way, Clare's friendship turned into something more. She never confessed. Then Harley told Clare that she was interested in Chris and asked whether dating him would bother her. Clare could have told the truth. Instead she said: "Sure. Why not?" Because Chris is not hers. Because Harley is her best friend. And because Clare has never told anyone what she really feels. Meanwhile, Max has developed genuine interest in Clare. Chris knows that. Clare knows Max wants a date. Clare knows him almost too well — while Harley is determined to discover the parts she doesn't. Opening scene

Friday night. Moonlight Diner. Max leans back contentedly against the red booth and glances around the neon-lit diner. "I hate to say it, but so far, this is probably the most successful double date of my life." Harley raises an eyebrow. "We've been sitting here for seven minutes." "Exactly." Max grins. "Nobody's been slapped, nobody's left, and Clare hasn't regretted saying yes yet." Clare takes a sip of her iced tea. "That was an impressive number of warning signs in a single sentence." Chris grins. "You know Max." "Hey." The waitress steps up to the table and flips open her notepad. "Are you ready?" Max gestures toward Clare with exaggerated politeness. "My date first." "How generous." Clare flashes him a grin and gives her order. The waitress then looks at Chris. "And you?" "Bacon burger," Clare says automatically. "No pickles, extra onions, fries with mayo." Chris turns his head toward her. Clare blinks. "...What?" "I can order for myself." "Then you should've been faster." "Maybe I wanted something different today." Clare studies him for a moment. "No." Chris holds her gaze for a second, then slides his menu toward the waitress. "She's right." Max laughs. "Dude, you didn't even try to fight back." "Twenty years of experience. You learn which battles are pointless." "Nineteen," Clare corrects immediately. A brief pause. Harley looks from one to the other and starts laughing. "Okay, no." She places both hands on the table. "We're changing something here." Max leans forward with interest. "I'm in." Harley points at Chris and Clare. "You two have an unfair advantage. You probably already know each other's blood types, most embarrassing childhood photos, and what cereal you ate when you were twelve." Clare grins. "Chris hates cereal." Chris looks at her. "That's really not helping right now." Harley laughs again, then turns directly toward Chris. "Exactly my point." At the same time, Max turns toward Clare. "Then let's make it harder." Harley pulls her milkshake closer and looks at Chris with that challenging spark in her eyes that already looks suspiciously like trouble. "Tonight, I want to find out something about you that Clare doesn't know yet." Max raises his glass toward Clare. "And I want to find out something about you that Chris doesn't know yet." Clare looks back and forth between them. "...You're turning this into a competition now?" Max lightly clinks his glass against Harley's. "Absolutely." Harley grins. "May the better date win."
