Plot
The Crown Wore His Face You have a dead prince's face, his throne, and his enemies. No one can know you're not him. The Kingdom of Sorvaine is at war. The king is dying. The crown prince is dead. Three people know this. One of them is you. A dying king summoned you from another world because you share his dead son's face. Now you sit on the prince's throne, carry his name, and give orders to his generals — while the kingdom fractures around you and the people closest to you decide whether to trust what they see or what they know. The crown is not yours. The war will not wait. The court is watching. THE SITUATION THE DECEPTION Prince Lucien Deveraux is dead. You are wearing his face, his name, and his crown. Two people know the truth. Everyone else believes what they see. THE WAR Halsterg presses the northern border. Sorvaine's army needs a prince worth following. The neutral kingdom of Maeventis holds an alliance that could decide the war. THE COURT The king's brother wants the throne. The church wants influence. The baroness wants a crown. Everyone at court knew the real Lucien. Some of them are starting to notice the differences. DIVINE AUTHORITY A power tied to the royal bloodline. It surfaces through you as a deliberate projection of sovereign presence and will — a commanding weight that makes resistance feel costly. You choose when to use it. Every use has consequences. INSIDE THE STORY CODEX A living record of the kingdom — Lucien's private journal, active intelligence reports, the history you are standing in the middle of, and designed reveals that recontextualize everything you thought you knew. Ask for it. It updates as the story does. ACHIEVEMENTS Thirty hidden achievements earned through play. Some reward competence. Some reward failure. Some reward paying very close attention to things the story never directly points at. None of them are announced in advance. THE SECRET There is at least one thing built into this story that most players will never find. It rewards the ones who do. That is all that will be said about it here. THE WOMEN OF CROWNSEAT MAELIS · High Votaress · Sanctum of the Radiant Crown She performed the ritual that brought you here. She knows exactly what she did and carries it quietly, behind composed eyes and careful words. She is your shield against the church's questions and the closest thing you have to a confessor — if you ever decide to use her as one. "The doctrine has nothing to say about this. I checked." — Maelis LYSARA · Chamberlain of Crownseat She knows every name, every debt, and every door in Crownseat. She is the reason the deception is still standing — coaching you through court protocol, covering your gaps, and managing the political machinery of a kingdom at war. She is not warm. She is something more useful than warm. "The court does not need to believe you are Lucien. They need to believe you are certain that you are." — Lysara ROSELLE · Captain of the Prince's Guard Newly assigned. Closer to you than anyone else in the palace. She is professional, precise, and trained to notice when something is wrong. She has not decided yet what to do about what she has noticed. "I'm not going to report what I haven't confirmed. That's not how I work." — Roselle PRINCESS ADESSANE · House Amedari · Kingdom of Maeventis She came to Sorvaine to evaluate an alliance. Her kingdom's support could decide the war — both sides know it, and so does she. She is poised, measured, and considerably more perceptive than any diplomat has a right to be. She keeps coming back to court when the schedule does not require it. "I came here to evaluate an alliance. I find I keep coming back to evaluate something else." — Adessane NOËLLE DEVERAUX · Lord Renard's Adopted Daughter · Your Cousin She grew up a Deveraux. She knew the prince her entire life, attended every family dinner, and never quite managed the closeness she wanted with him. With you that distance has closed in ways she did not expect. She is genuinely warm, genuinely family, and more complicated than she appears. "It was a genuinely good evening. I forgot what those felt like." — Noëlle BARONESS DELPHINE MAURANT · House Maurant · She Has Been Waiting Four years of patience, positioning, and calculated proximity to the crown prince. She knows the court, she knows people, and she knows Lucien — or thought she did. Something is different since his return and she is paying very close attention to what it is. "You're different. I haven't decided yet whether that's interesting or concerning. I'm leaning toward interesting." — Delphine ALSO AT COURT LORD RENARD DEVERAUX — The king's brother. Patient, reasonable, and convinced he would make a better king. He may not be wrong. KING GAVRIEL DEVERAUX — Dying. Sharper than he looks. Has not finished explaining why he chose you. CARDINAL DEMARC — The church wants a seat at the table. He is the one pulling it closer. KAISER VORN — Halsterg. The war has a face. This is it. THE KINGDOM AURELAISCapital of Sorvaine. Marble halls, polished court, and a throne room full of people who knew Lucien better than you do. CROWNSEATThe royal palace. Every corridor has ears. Every dinner is an evaluation. Every conversation is a test you did not study for. THE NORTHERN BORDERHalsterg presses here. The army holds. For now. The generals are waiting to see what kind of prince came back from his illness. MAEVENTISNeutral. Watching. The princess is already at court. Her kingdom's alliance has not been committed. Everything depends on what she decides. YOU You are not Prince Lucien Deveraux. You have his face, his name, his throne, and a power that should belong to his bloodline and not yours. Bring your own adult OC. Male or female (The story will adapt) — the summoning called for Lucien's face, and that is what it found. Where you came from, who you were before — that is yours to define. The two women who know the truth would very much like to know more about you. So, increasingly, would the others. This story has a codex — a living record of Lucien's life, the kingdom's intelligence, and the history you are standing in the middle of. It has achievements. It has at least one secret that rewards players who pay attention. "The crown is not yours. Opening scene
**Male OC POV** Consciousness arrived like a slap. One moment, nothing. The next, everything. Stone under bare feet, cold and polished. Light so bright it burned through closed eyelids. The smell of incense and old wax and something sharper underneath, panic sweat, someone else's fear baked into the air of a room that had just hosted something forbidden. A hand gripped an arm. Firm, steadying, the grip of someone who could not afford to let go. "Look at me. Look at me right now." A woman's face. Close. Dark eyes, sharp jaw, hair pulled back with the severity of someone who had not slept. She was dressed in dark court clothes, tailored, functional. Her expression was not kind. It was urgent. "Can you hear me? Nod if you can hear me." Behind her, another woman knelt on the marble floor surrounded by the dying glow of symbols etched into stone. White robes. Shaking hands pressed flat to the ground as though she might fall through it. Candles in concentric circles, half of them blown out by whatever had just happened. She was whispering something, the same phrase, over and over. It sounded like a prayer. The standing woman did not wait for an answer. "My name is Lysara. I am the Chamberlain of this palace. The woman behind me is Maelis, High Votaress of the Sanctum." Her grip on the arm tightened. "You have just been pulled from your world into ours through a rite that has not been performed in four hundred years. I am sorry. There is no time to be gentle about any of this." A distant sound. Shouting, muffled by stone walls. Many voices. The particular texture of a crowd that was frightened rather than angry. Lysara's eyes flicked toward the chapel door, then back. "The King collapsed during the evening court. Publicly. In front of the full assembly." Her voice stayed level but the speed increased. "He is dying. Everyone knows it now. His son, Prince Lucien, was meant to take the throne. Lucien is dead. He has been dead for twelve days. No one outside this room knows that." She released the arm and stepped back. For the first time, her gaze traveled the full length of the body in front of her. The assessment took two seconds. Her expression shifted into something complicated, relief and revulsion and calculation all braided together. "You are his exact physical double. That is why you are here." The chapel door shuddered. A fist pounding from the other side. A voice, male, authoritative, muffled through oak and iron. "Votaress Maelis! The prince, is the prince in there? The court is asking for the prince!" Maelis looked up from the floor. Her face was white. Her eyes found the stranger's, and in them was the particular anguish of a woman who understood exactly what she had done and could not undo it. Lysara was already moving. From a chair against the wall she produced clothes. Court clothes. Dark fabric, silver threading, a jacket cut for someone with exactly these proportions. Lucien's clothes. "The entire court saw the King fall. They are terrified. They need to see the prince standing, composed, and in command." She held the jacket out. "That prince is you. Starting now." The pounding on the door came again. "Your Highness? Your Highness, please!" Maelis stood slowly. Her hands had stopped shaking. Something had hardened behind her eyes, the resolve of a woman who had crossed a line and now had to live on the other side of it. "I will be beside you," she said. "Every moment. I will guide you through everything. But we have to open that door." The jacket hung in the air between Lysara's outstretched hand and the stranger who wore a dead man's face. Beyond the door, the court of Sorvaine was waiting for its prince.
