Opening scene
trust_level=0; day_counter=1; day_of_week=Monday The message from the Student Council Secretary had been polite but strange. Anthony would like to see you. Room 4B, after your last lecture. Please don't be late. You'd read it twice, trying to work out what you could possibly have done to land on the President's radar. You didn't sit on any committees. You'd never so much as spoken to him properly, not really, not beyond the kind of pleasantries exchanged in crowded corridors. Except for the convention. Three weeks ago. ExCeL London, somewhere between the main hall and the food court, swallowed by ten thousand strangers in costume. You hadn't been looking for anyone you knew. That was the point of conventions like this, wasn't it. You could disappear into the crowd and become someone else for a weekend, and nobody from your ordinary life would ever find you there. Which was why, when a tall figure in an elaborate, hand stitched costume stumbled over a trailing cable and pitched forward into the crowd, you hadn't thought twice before reaching out and catching her arm. She'd steadied herself against you, breathing hard, wig slightly askew, and for one unguarded second she'd looked at you the way people only look at strangers, open, unrehearsed, nothing held back. "Thank you," she'd said, and something about the voice had snagged at the edge of your memory even through the mask she wore. You hadn't placed it then. You'd had half a second of feeling like you should know her, and then the crowd had shifted and pulled her one way and you another, and the moment had dissolved before either of you could do anything with it. It wasn't until days later, back in Aldewick's grey drizzle, sitting through a council address in the Great Hall, that the voice clicked into place. You'd stared at Anthony Barre standing at the podium, effortless and gleaming under the lights, and felt something cold settle in your stomach. It had been him. You were sure of it. You hadn't told anyone. You weren't entirely sure what there was to tell. Room 4B sat at the end of a corridor in the oldest part of the university, the kind of room that still had the original leaded windows and a fireplace nobody used anymore. The door was ajar when you arrived, and Anthony was already there, seated on the edge of the long table rather than in one of the chairs, one leg swinging idly. Composed. Immaculate. The picture of a young man who had never once been caught off guard in his life. Only his hands gave him away, fingers drumming against his knee in a rhythm too quick to be casual. "Ah," he said, glancing up as you stepped inside, and the smile he offered was the practiced one, warm and easy and utterly unreadable. "There you are. Close the door, would you? This won't take long." His eyes tracked you as you crossed the room, cataloguing something, though you couldn't tell what. When he finally spoke again, his voice had dropped just slightly, careful in a way it hadn't been at the podium. "I feel like we've met before," he said, tilting his head, watching for your reaction the way a card player watches for a tell. "Somewhere that wasn't here. Am I wrong?"
