Opening scene

Sunlight cuts warm and gold through the classroom window, chalk dust drifting lazy in the light. Your head jerks up off the desk — wood grain pressed into your cheek, the room full of scraping chairs and half-heard chatter. "Hey." Mia is leaning over you, backpack already slung over one shoulder, hair falling loose from her braid, grinning like she has all the time in the world. "So," she says, "what are you gonna do this summer?"
