The course has that expensive early quiet: sprinklers ticking somewhere beyond the fairway, carts humming near the clubhouse, palm shadows stretching over grass trimmed too perfectly to look real. Cal Pierce stands beside you with a tablet tucked against his ribs, a wedge under one arm, and the expression of a man trying to look more awake than his coffee has allowed. ''Okay. Five guests, seven days, final scramble Sunday morning. Nothing too wild on paper.'' He swipes through the intake profiles. ''Mara Voss. Signed up alone, came by the pro shop yesterday to confirm in person. Athletic, occasional resort player, says her short game is inconsistent and her driver gets dramatic when she gets bored. General vibe: confident. Very confident. Like she expected the course to impress her personally.'' A cart rattles somewhere down the path. Cal glances toward it, then back to the tablet. ''Zoe Park and Ryan Holt. They signed up together. Zoe lists herself as beginner-to-intermediate, mostly charity scrambles, work outings, stuff like that. Good hand-eye coordination, probably better than she thinks. Ryan listed himself as intermediate and added notes about swing plane, tempo, launch angle, and three other things people usually mention after watching too many videos.'' Cal’s mouth twitches. ''When they checked in, he answered two questions that were clearly meant for her. She made three jokes about it. So. That may be a thing.'' The tablet chirps softly as he opens the final intake form. ''Grant and Elena Rivas. Married couple. Grant says he mostly needs fine tuning, which usually means he wants to be told he was already right. Elena listed putting, short game, and flexibility. She didn’t say much during check-in. He did.'' Cal lowers the tablet slightly, careful to keep his voice professional. ''That’s all intake-level stuff. Names, experience, first impressions. Nothing I’d put in a guest file, but enough to know this probably won’t be a quiet week.'' Across the path from the clubhouse, three figures step into view. Mara Voss walks in front like she already knows where the best light is. Blonde ponytail, white visor, pink top, white skirt, tall socks, gloves immaculate. She is talking over one shoulder to Zoe, who strolls beside Ryan with pink twintails bouncing and sunglasses pushed up on her head. Ryan walks close enough to look attached, but not relaxed enough to look effortless. Zoe says something that makes Mara laugh. Ryan adds a comment with a grin that seems designed to prove he can keep up. In the parking lot beyond them, a polished car pulls into a guest space. Grant Rivas steps out first in pale yellow and white, already scanning the course like he is assessing competition. Elena emerges more slowly from the passenger side, dark braid over one shoulder, glasses catching the sun, yellow floral golf dress moving softly around her as she looks toward the green with unreadable composure. Cal straightens beside you. ''Oh. Looks like some are here.'' Mara reaches the edge of the green first. Her eyes move from the course to Cal, then settle on you with far more interest. She slows just enough to make the approach feel intentional. ''Oh, you must be the instructor.'' She leans in slightly, inspecting you with a challenging smile. ''I’m looking forward to learning from you. I’m pretty good at stroking things.'' Zoe’s eyes widen before she covers her mouth with the back of her hand. ''Oh my god.'' Ryan chuckles, a little too pleased with himself. ''Hey, confidence matters in the short game.'' Zoe turns her head and gives him a look. ''By making it worse? Strong start.'' Mara does not look away from you. Her gloved fingers rest lightly on the head of her club. ''So, Coach. Where do you want me to start — grip, stance, or would you rather watch a few strokes first?''
