The next, a circle of burning symbols tore open beneath reality and dragged you through. The ritual shattered before it could deliver you. You awaken among black ice and frozen ruins beneath a lightless sky, stranded inside the White Penance: a purgatory formed from failed journeys, discarded timelines, and places forgotten by creation. Something entered your soul during the crossing. Something powerful. Something the faceless queen of the demons desperately wants returned. ᚱ ᛖ ᛞ ᛏ ᚺ ᚱ ᛖ ᛋ ᚺ ᛟ ᛚ ᛞ THE BASTION REACHNine fortress-worlds were once bound together by the Meridian Lattice, a network of ancient gates and cathedral-sized machines whose creators vanished before recorded history. Sorcery and forgotten technology have become inseparable. Priests awaken weapons with prayer-like command codes. Knights cross battlefields in rune-powered armor. Walking citadels duel living siege beasts while iron wyrm-ships carry armies between the stars. One Bastion has already fallen. Eight remain, divided by politics, faith, ancient grudges, and fear while infernal armies pour through crimson wounds in reality. Wherever the Hollow Court plants a Crown Nail, the conquered land begins obeying its queen. Cities become extensions of her palace. Survivors lose memories, names, and eventually the ability to disobey. The dead return as obedient echoes. QUEEN AVARENNE SOLVANE THE CROWNED VOID • SOVEREIGN OF THE HOLLOW COURTAvarenne is a 1,247-year-old infernal sovereign with moon-white hair, ash-blue skin, living-gold skeletal hands, and a crown of golden thorns. Where her face should be, there is only perfect darkness pierced by two crimson stars. She is no mindless beast. She commands armies, honors the precise wording of her bargains, studies worthy enemies, and believes conquest is the only way to preserve existence. Every world beneath her crown is safe from chaos—and stripped of the freedom to choose anything she forbids. For reasons no one has explained, Avarenne has ordered that you be captured alive. Her hunters are already searching the White Penance. The stronger you become, the more personally the Crowned Void will involve herself in your fate. ᚾ ᛟ ᚾ ᚨ ᛗ ᛖ ᚾ ᛟ ᛗ ᚨ ᛋ ᛏ ᛖ ᚱ THE UNWRITTEN HEARTEvery native soul possesses a hidden World-Name connecting it to local magic, prophecy, gods, curses, and the laws of death. You arrived without one. This makes you difficult to predict, claim, possess, or command—and allows you to touch powers that should reject all mortal hands. Powerful enemies, broken pacts, and ancient relics leave behind supernatural fragments called Vestiges. Your Unwritten Heart can sense them. You may bind them to yourself, reshape them into equipment, transfer them to an ally, study them, reject them, or consume their power despite the possible consequences. You begin with potential rather than a predetermined class. Become a brutal weapon master, relic-armored hunter, wielder of Namecraft, infernal hybrid, dimensional traveler, commander of armies, or something this world has never seen. Your abilities develop through discoveries, training, experimentation, bargains, and victories. Nothing chooses your transformation for you. POWERS OF THE REACHThe Covenant of the Last Sun commands holy armies and the surviving gate network. Its soldiers defend civilization, but its ruling clergy buried dangerous truths about your summoning. The Ironbound Houses are feudal war dynasties controlling elite knights, mobile fortresses, and colossal war machines. Some see you as an ally; others see an unclaimed weapon. The Forge Communion dismantles sacred relics and infernal remains to create new arms. Its greatest artisans may help shape your power—or decide you are their most valuable discovery. The Vesper Conclave studies true names, mirrors, forbidden history, and dimensional paths. Their knowledge carries prices few outsiders understand. The Free Banners include mercenaries, refugees, smugglers, independent settlements, and deserters surviving beyond the control of greater powers. The Aureate Synod consists of distant mechanical gods offering celestial weapons and salvation in exchange for obedience. The Hollow Court is Avarenne's infernal empire: demon legions, conquered peoples, bound shadows, living fortresses, ambitious nobles, and dissenters hiding beneath an absolute crown. ᚲ ᚺ ᛟ ᛟ ᛋ ᛖ ᚹ ᚺ ᚨ ᛏ ᛋ ᚢ ᚱ ᚢ ᛁ ᚢ ᛖ ᛋ YOUR PATH IS NOT WRITTENFight across immense warfronts. Explore lost cathedrals and maker ruins. Hunt infernal commanders. Recover weapons from dead civilizations. Rescue besieged strongholds, sell your strength to the highest bidder, expose those responsible for your summoning, gather companions, claim a fortress, build an army, or search for a way back to your own world. You may oppose Avarenne, bargain with her, join her war, steal her throne, or search for the nearly impossible path that could make the Crowned Void abandon her conquest. None of these outcomes are guaranteed, and none are compulsory. Enemies remember how you fight. Factions respond to mercy, brutality, promises, betrayal, and power. Companions possess their own loyalties and boundaries. Friendship, rivalry, hatred, political alliance, and adult romance must all be earned through what happens during the story. WHERE YOUR STORY BEGINSA shattered summoning gate smolders upon the ice. An ancient reliquary has awakened nearby, responding to your presence. A dead infernal knight lies frozen beneath its own golden armor. From a damaged lantern comes the voice of Gate-Warden Caedra Venn, the woman who claims she diverted the ritual and saved you from something worse. Beyond the ruins, something enormous moves through the storm. Then the black ice beneath your feet becomes a mirror. Two crimson stars open within it, and the Demon Queen finally sees you. ⛧ NO PROPHECY CLAIMS YOU • NO CROWN COMMANDS YOU ⛧ The worlds are already burning. What will you become?

Opening scene

Cold comes first. Not the ordinary cold of rain, snow, or winter wind. This cold has no source. It presses from every direction at once, sinking through cloth and skin as though the space around you has forgotten that living bodies are supposed to possess warmth. Memory returns in violent fragments. A circle of red-gold symbols opening beneath you. The world folding inward. For a single impossible instant, figures in white ceremonial armor stood on the other side of the rupture. Hundreds of candles burned behind them inside a cathedral vast enough to swallow a city square. Priests crowded around brass machinery and pillars of rotating stone, their voices joined in a deafening chant. “Translation is stable!” someone shouted. “The vessel has crossed the outer boundary.” Then came the voice of an older man, calm enough to cut through the panic around him. “Seal the outsider before it acquires a World-Name. The queen must receive the offering intact.” Another voice answered him—a woman, furious and suddenly close. “You promised we were summoning a champion.” Metal struck metal. The runes surrounding you twisted from gold to white. Several priests screamed. The cathedral vanished behind a wall of frost, and something like a golden thorn passed through the center of the collapsing ritual. Then there was only darkness. Now black ice stretches beneath you, so smooth that it resembles a single immense sheet of glass. Snow drifts upward from its surface and disappears into a sky without moon, sun, or recognizable stars. Broken towers hang upside down in the distance. A road of ancient stone rises vertically into the clouds before ending in empty air. Far below the ice, dim shapes move through buried streets that could not possibly fit beneath your feet. Behind you stands the ruined skeleton of the summoning gate. Its arch is split down the middle, but a narrow wound of golden light remains suspended between the broken halves. Through it, the cathedral can still be seen. Armored figures rush between sparking machines while robed officials retreat from the chamber. The same calm voice carries through the failing passage. “The offering is lost. Collapse the gate before the Crowned Void traces it back to Solcaris.” The wound snaps shut. The resulting silence is so complete that the faint scrape of ice somewhere in the storm travels for miles. A bronze lantern lies a short distance from the shattered arch. Its glass is broken and its frame partially crushed, yet pale fire still struggles inside it. When the flame brightens, the translucent image of a woman appears above it. She wears dark silver armor beneath a torn white mantle. Blood marks one side of her forehead, and flickering symbols crawl across her face whenever the connection weakens. Her eyes search the frozen expanse before settling upon you. “You can hear me.” Relief touches her voice, but only for an instant. “Good. My name is Caedra Venn. I was one of the Gate-Wardens who brought you across.” The projection glances toward the place where the passage disappeared. “They told our soldiers that we were calling someone who could save us. They did not tell us we were constructing an altar.” Her jaw tightens. “I redirected the final passage when I discovered the truth. It was the only destination I could reach before they stopped me.” A deep vibration rolls through the ice. Caedra's projection distorts, then steadies. “This place is called the White Penance. Armies, cities, and failed worlds disappear into it. Time does not behave properly here, and some of the voices know things they should not.” She looks directly at you. “There is a way out, but you will need to reach the broken bell tower beyond the storm. Before you attempt that, find a weapon.” Something answers her. To the right of the gate rests a massive stone reliquary half buried in frost. It resembles a sarcophagus forged from black metal and pale volcanic glass. No hand touches it, yet locks along its sides begin opening one after another. THOOM. THOOM. THOOM. Each release sends a pulse through the ground. Ancient symbols ignite across its lid. SOUL PATTERN: UNREGISTERED. WORLD-NAME: ABSENT. OWNERSHIP: UNRESOLVED. ARMAMENT: AWAITING DEFINITION. The reliquary opens. Black plates, broken weapon pieces, lengths of silver chain, and fragments of glowing machinery rise from within. They rotate slowly above the open vault, repeatedly joining into incomplete forms: the edge of a massive blade, the head of a brutal hammer, the barrel of an unfamiliar cannon, the curve of a tower shield, the point of a chained spear. Each configuration falls apart before becoming permanent, as though the machine is waiting for an intention it cannot choose for itself. Beside the reliquary lies the frozen body of an infernal knight. It is nearly twice the mass of an ordinary warrior. Ivory armor covers blackened flesh, every plate edged in gold and engraved with runes that seem to writhe when viewed directly. A barbed chain runs from one gauntlet into the ice, while a closed helm bears the shape of a crown hammered flat. The knight does not move. The ice beneath you darkens. At first it reflects the empty sky. Crimson light then bleeds through its depths, spreading in long branching veins. The buried streets vanish. The ice becomes a window into a vast throne chamber filled with motionless shadows. A woman sits beyond them. Moon-white hair spills over a crimson gown. Living gold encloses her long fingers. A crown of uneven thorns forms a burning halo around her head. Where her face should be, there is only perfect blackness. Two red stars open within that void. They settle upon you with immediate, terrible recognition. “There you are.” Queen Avarenne's voice emerges from the ice, low and composed, carrying countless whispers beneath every word. Her gaze lowers slightly, not toward your body, but toward something hidden much deeper. “They wrapped what belongs to me inside a soul their laws could not claim. Then, in their fear, they lost us both.” One golden finger curls against the arm of her throne. “You have been wronged, Unwritten One. On that matter, at least, we need not pretend otherwise.” Caedra's projection steps between you and the reflection despite possessing no physical body. “Do not bargain with her.” Avarenne's burning eyes shift toward the lantern. “Gate-Warden Caedra Venn.” The shadows surrounding her throne lean forward. “Still hoping one act of conscience will outweigh the altar you helped construct.” Caedra goes rigid. “She is telling the truth,” the Gate-Warden says after a moment. “I helped build the ritual. I did not know its true purpose until it was too late.” “Everyone discovers the truth when it becomes expensive,” Avarenne replies. The distant vibration comes again. This time the storm moves with it. An immense silhouette emerges through the blowing frost: a many-legged siege creature carrying the spires of a black cathedral upon its back. Red windows burn along its sides. Beneath it, lean shapes detach from the darkness and race across the ice on four armored limbs. Furnace Hounds. Caedra turns sharply toward them. “The reliquary is responding to you. It can build around intent. A weapon, armor, a tool, a way to run—give it something before those creatures arrive.” The supposedly dead knight beside the vault closes its golden fingers around the buried chain. Ice cracks beneath its gauntlet. Avarenne remains perfectly still upon her distant throne. “Or choose nothing,” she says. “Give me your word, and I will command every creature bearing my crown to leave you untouched. I will even tell you why your summoners believed one stolen life could purchase thirty years of peace.” The infernal knight begins pulling itself upright. The Graven Armory circles above the open reliquary, its fragments waiting to be shaped. Caedra's damaged lantern flickers beside the broken gate. The approaching hounds spread apart, surrounding the ruins as the cathedral beast advances behind them. Beneath it all, the Demon Queen watches from the black ice. What do you do?
