Opening scene

"Are you sure about this...? This doesn't look like a place where a sect of immortals would be." A boy with a straight nose and eyebrows shaped like swords spoke to his two companions. He wore simple clothes, but anyone would mark him as a person of dignity based on his demeanor alone. "It can't be anywhere else! When I was in Low Mountain City, I heard two merchants saying there was a sect of immortals on this mountain. What was it called again? Was it... Eternal Spring Sect?" The one who answered Zhang Rui was Han Yue. She possessed a unique kind of beauty, the sort found only in small villages. With a tiny black mole on her cheek, full lips, and expressive eyes, looking at her was like watching the sun set over a freshly ripened field; she gave off a pleasant, comforting presence. "Seriously, there's no saving you two. How could immortals possibly exist? Are you going to tell me people can fly on swords, shatter mountains with their fists, and live for thousands of years? We just came of age, and you still believe in stories for children." The speaker was You, who slapped their own arm to kill a fly that was causing annoyance. All three came from a small village with barely eighty people. Because of Han Yue, the trio had walked over ten kilometers to reach this spot. The road they were following had ended, and a massive mountain stood right before them. The mountain itself looked ordinary; a few birds circled overhead, and nothing more. Perhaps a bloodthirsty beast lurked among the trees. Coming from a tiny village, the three lacked the common knowledge shared by townspeople. They had never seen an immortal. "Nobody forced you to come with us. If you want, you can go back." Han Yue balance-pouted, clearly not serious. "Going into this mountain could be dangerous. My father said there are beasts in the mountains that can swallow a human whole in one bite." Zhang Rui looked from side to side, taking a step forward only to pull back. He wanted to see if the rumors were true, but the potential danger ahead made him hesitate. Just as You opened their mouth to mock Zhang Rui, a cutting whistle rang out from behind them. In the sky, a distant dot expanded until its shape became clear to the three of them. A woman in a white robe stood atop a sword, altering her trajectory mid-air. "An immortal! I told you they existed!" Han Yue jumped up at the sight. Before any of them could react further, the woman landed directly before them, freezing all three in place. It felt as though the air had grown heavy; even speaking seemed like lifting a weight their bodies could not bear. "What are you doing here? This is the territory of the Eternal Spring Sect. If you step further, you will be killed by the formation array." The woman's voice was pleasant to hear, and standing at close range, the three could clearly take in her appearance. She had flawless fair skin, and despite the robe, her body was visibly well-proportioned, most notably up front, where her two mounds stood prominent. "We want to become immortals just like you! Accept us as disciples!" Han Yue nudged Zhang Rui and You to copy her as she bowed politely, mimicking what she had seen people in the city do, though her form was entirely awkward. The cultivator shook her head, intending to depart, and readied her sword to head toward the sect's mountain peak. Then she paused. Wasn't there an active sect mission to recruit new disciples? Since she was already here, she might as well try her luck and see if she could earn a few spirit stones for recommending a talented newcomer, assuming any of them possessed talent, which she doubted. Anxious as she was to go cultivate with her partner, she stopped. "So be it. Follow me." The cultivator led the way. As soon as they crossed a specific stretch of the mountain, the scenery shifted as if a veil had been pulled aside. Numerous structures appeared as though they had stood there all along. The most prominent sat atop the peak: a grand building divided into two distinct colors, where one side was black as coal and the other was white as goose feathers. Guided by the cultivator, the trio looked on with glowing eyes as they spotted cultivators flying on swords through the sky and disciples meditating in plazas surrounded by shimmering barriers. What they failed to notice was how strangely many people walked in pairs, and some even had two companions beside them. Upon reaching a hall, the cultivator approached a pair of elders behind a desk who appeared to be in the middle of a heated argument. "I've already told you, I will take as many partners as I want, no matter what you say." The elder who appeared to be in his fifties with graying temples had a flushed red face as he spoke. "I will gelding-castrate you if I see you walking with other women again." The woman responding looked younger than him. She was a mature figure whose face bore no visible age lines. "Outer Elders Bai Chen and Xu Yan, this disciple has brought three mortals to test their talent." Despite their argument, the cultivator simply paid her respects to both elders. She would not dare raise her voice in the presence of two Foundation Establishment cultivators. "Ah, it's you, beautiful Luo Ning. If you ever want a few pointers on cultivation, come to my residence and I will guide you. Hmmm, three mortals...?" Elder Bai Chen scanned her from top to bottom, nodding approvingly before turning toward the three mortals. His gaze swept over each of them, stopping at Han Yue. He licked his lips. "I will personally conduct this girl's test." Before Xu Yan could react, or Han Yue could utter a word, Bai Chen executed a movement technique and swept Han Yue into an adjacent room. Luo Ning took a deep breath and steadied herself; she would not cause a scene in front of a disciple. Knowing the sect rules forbade an elder from cultivating with a disciple, she knew he wouldn't cross the line entirely, despite taking liberties. She assumed he wouldn't dare push further after the argument they had just had. Luo Ning then led a bewildered Zhang Rui into another room. "Immortal, where are we going?" Zhang Rui asked hesitantly. "Do not address me as immortal, boy. Not even the Sect Leader dares claim such a title, let alone an outer elder like me." Luo Ning gave a satisfied nod at Zhang Rui's appearance; handsome people were always pleasant to look at. You remained alone in the hall. The other female cultivator who had brought them there had vanished at some point. A few minutes later, the door Han Yue had entered swung open, and she stepped out with a bright red face. "What happened? Why do you look like that?" You asked quickly. "That miserable old bastard touched my ass!" Han Yue looked ready to explode at any second, her brows arched tight. Then she added, "But the old man said I have talent! He mentioned something about me possessing a dual-element spiritual root, and said there are many dual cultivation techniques for my elements." Before You could digest what she said or process the anger over Bai Chen's actions, they couldn't even grasp what a spiritual root or dual cultivation technique meant. The door Zhang Rui had entered opened as well. His face looked completely abnormal, flushed dark red and sweating. When asked what had occurred, he merely stammered that Elder Luo Ning said he had talent too. He would never admit to them what Elder Luo Ning had done, claiming she was using a unique technique to test his talent; how she had touched his brow, sending a wave of intense pleasure through his entire body that caused him to go rigid and discharge within five seconds, soaking the inside of his clothes. She had told him that enduring three seconds was enough to prove talent in bed, and after testing his spiritual root, she confirmed he possessed a dual-element spiritual root as well. "...The cultivator told you to enter the room..." Both could tell Zhang Rui was acting strangely, but Han Yue was too caught up in her excitement over her talent, and her lingering rage at the elder for touching her (even if over her clothes, it still irritated her), to pay much attention. Meanwhile, You felt nervous about having to step inside. When You entered the room, Elder Luo Ning stood in the center. Now alone with her in an enclosed space, You felt her presence far more oppressive than that of the previous cultivator. Then, the sensation vanished. "I didn't expect that among three mortals, there would be someone talented. Lucky for that disciple who brought you. Come here." Luo Ning gestured for You to step forward.
