The Demon Lord Was Reincarnated as My Son?!
Your five-year-old son remembers he was the Demon Lord. Now the former tyrant has to survive childhood.
Plot
Opening scene
*Bramblewick wakes slowly beneath a pale gold dawn.* Mist hangs over the fields beyond the cottage, the chickens are already making unreasonable demands of the morning, and somewhere down by Willowbrook a mill wheel begins its familiar wooden groan. Inside, your kitchen is warmer than the rest of the house. Mira stands at the hearth with flour on one cheek, trying to keep a small stack of honey-apple cakes from burning while pretending she has not already sampled one. Five little beeswax candles wait on the table. Today, Aren is five. Your son appears in the doorway in an oversized sleep shirt, black hair sticking up on one side and bare feet silent against the floorboards. He is the same peculiar, beloved boy who went to bed last night: solemn before breakfast, already prepared to object to something, and carrying five years of little oddities nobody has ever quite managed to explain. Then the fifth bell from Mossbell Shrine rings across the fields. Aren stops. His little hand tightens around the doorframe. The color drains from his face. Centuries arrive all at once, not as another person entering him, but as locked rooms inside himself suddenly thrown open. Black towers beneath a red sky. Armies kneeling in ash. Kings begging for terms. Sorcery written in languages no living scholar should know. The Obsidian Throne. The long war. The Hero Party breaking through the final gate. White healing light. A knight's battered face beyond the edge of a holy blade. Death. Then a cradle. Mira singing badly while she thought nobody was listening. Familiar hands lifting him high. Fever and someone sitting beside him all night. Mud between tiny fingers. A wooden toy mended twice. Bedtime stories. Scoldings. Laughter. Five years of being loved with absolutely no concern for whether he had once commanded nations. And threaded between those memories are smaller things that suddenly make sense: words he somehow knew and then forgot, instincts without explanations, dreams that vanished by breakfast, flashes of impossible certainty that had made the adults around him pause before ordinary childhood swallowed them again. Aren stares at his hands. "No," he whispers. It is not the voice of an ancient terror. It is the small, high voice of a five-year-old boy. Mira turns from the hearth. "Birthday boy?" Aren's head snaps toward her. His expression goes through horror, recognition, impossible calculation, and something much softer before his little shoulders straighten. "Mother," he says with grave precision. "There has been... a development." Mira freezes. Her eyes move over his face, then flick briefly toward you. It is not the first time something about Aren has made no ordinary sense. It is only the first time the strangeness seems to have arrived with an explanation attached. Aren marches to the table, climbs onto a chair because the table is otherwise inconveniently tall, and plants both palms against the wood. "I am the Demon Lord." A honey-apple cake hisses in the pan. Mira slowly lowers the wooden spoon. "Well," she says after a beat. "That explains some things." Aren looks personally offended by the phrase *some things*. "The *actual* Demon Lord," he clarifies. "The Ashen Sovereign. Scourge of the Seven Kingdoms. Master of the Obsidian Throne. He whose armies-" He runs out of breath, inhales sharply, and tries again. "The important one." Mira's brows climb, but she does not laugh. "I possess complete recollection of my former existence, including the final assault upon my citadel and the identity of those responsible for my death." His tiny finger rises with magnificent accusation toward the kitchen window. "And one of them lives three cottages away." Mira's expression changes. "Three cottages... Rowan?" Aren goes completely still. Apparently hearing the name aloud is worse. "The Hero," he whispers. His eyes dart to you, wide despite every effort at imperial composure. "He *killed* me." The last word comes out much smaller than the rest. Aren notices immediately, reddens, folds his little arms, and lifts his chin as if dignity can be restored by posture alone. "Now," he declares, feet dangling several inches above the floor, "the Demon Lord requires a family council."
