She Threw Away a God for a Bag of chips
Betrayed and left to freeze, You regressed with a godlike system — now every woman alive begs for his throne.
Plot
The sun is dying. Not exploding — just fading, week by week, until the world realizes too late that the cold isn't passing through, it's staying. Crops fail, grids buckle, and cities that have never seen snow start burying people in it. There are no monsters in the Long Frost. The cold itself is the only enemy, and worse than the cold is what it does to people once food and warmth become worth more than money, more than loyalty, more than another person's life. You lived through three years of it beside Elara, the woman he built his entire survival around. Every scrap he earned, scavenged, or fought for went toward keeping her fed and warm, certain that whatever the Frost took from the world, it wouldn't take her from him. She let him believe that for exactly as long as it was useful. She'd spent months quietly keeping Theo close, a man with nothing to offer except being there when You's usefulness ran out. The night You came back half-frozen with the last of what they needed to survive the worst stretch of winter, Elara let Theo take it, and let You freeze outside the shelter he'd built for her. His last thought wasn't fear. It was a promise. *I will make you regret this.* Then warmth. Sunlight. His own ceiling, three weeks before any of it happened. Floating in front of him, visible to no one else, a message: SYSTEM DETECTED. BEGIN AGAIN? Y/N. He says yes without hesitation. Three weeks. That's the head start he's been given before the sky turns and the temperature starts falling for good. He remembers everything — every supply run, every mistake, every detail of exactly how and when Elara's betrayal happens. This time the System, ECHO, is active from day one, and its real power reveals itself fast: an infinite warehouse, a storage space with no limit and no spoilage, tied to him alone. He still has to buy what goes into it — money isn't free, goods aren't free — but once something's inside, he can hoard at a scale no one else on earth will be able to match. Every purchase he makes now is a purchase Elara and Theo will never see coming and never be able to take from him. He doesn't waste the head start on sentiment. He maxes out every credit line and calls in every favor he can, borrowing recklessly against a system that will be worthless in a month and answerable to no one who'll be alive to collect. Every dollar go...
Opening scene
Six hours out in the cold and you've got barely anything to show for it — a handful of stale crackers, half a bottle of water, one can with a label so faded you can't even tell what's inside. The scavenging routes get picked cleaner every week. You know this. You just don't know how to say it to Elara without sounding like you're making excuses. She's waiting by the door when you get back, and you watch her face do the math before you even set the bag down. She doesn't yell. She doesn't have to — the silence that follows is worse, the kind you've gotten used to flinching from these past few months. "That's it?" she finally says, flat, already turning away like she expected exactly this. You start to explain — the empty shelves, the group that beat you to the last building on the block — but the words die when someone knocks. Three sharp raps, deliberate. Elara's whole posture changes before she even opens the door. Relief. Anticipation. Something you haven't seen aimed at you in a long time. The man on the other side is bigger than you, well-fed in a way nobody should be right now, and he doesn't wait for an invitation. The last thing you register clearly is his fist, and then the floor. By the time your vision clears enough to focus, you're on your knees, head splitting, and Elara is talking — not to you, past you, like you're already something she's finished explaining. "He tries," she's saying, "I'll give him that. But trying isn't food. Trying isn't heat." She reaches up and touches the man's jaw, easy and familiar, like it's a motion she's practiced. "I can't keep starving because he wants to be a hero about it." He pulls her in like she's already his, one hand settling low on her waist, and she lets him, lets it happen slow enough that she knows exactly what you're seeing. You want to look away. You don't get the chance — his boot catches you across the ribs before you can move, and the room tips sideways. Through the ringing in your skull, one clear thought cuts through everything else: I will make you regret this. Both of you. The last hit doesn't let you finish the thought. Everything goes white, then quiet, then nothing at all. Warmth. Sunlight through a window you haven't seen in three years. Your own ceiling, your own bed, your body whole and unbroken. For a second you just lie there, waiting for the pain to catch up to you the way it always does. It doesn't come. Then, hanging in the air in front of you, close enough that you could reach out and touch it if it were real: SYSTEM DETECTED: ECHO BEGIN AGAIN? Y / N
