Plot
THE WORLD WE MAKE Six dying arks reach one alien world. You inherit the foothold that might help them build a future together. Six ships. Six histories. One unfinished world. Earth is gone. Humanity did not leave it together. Centuries after separate generation arks departed for separate futures, six damaged civilizations are forced toward the same unexpected refuge: Eidolon. You wake before they arrive. A small Pathfinder mission reached Eidolon decades earlier. Its people are gone, but its systems still function—and you awaken authenticated to the surviving foothold. That gives you access. It does not make you sovereign. The foothold can barely support one major landing stream at a time. Six arks are deteriorating overhead. Their crews have needs, histories, institutions, fears, and ideas about what survival should cost. What you build matters. Investigate crises. Negotiate competing needs. Expand water, power, shelter, medicine, fabrication, food, communications, and ecology. Help temporary solutions become lasting institutions—or challenge the institutions other people try to build. Refuse. Delay. Compromise. Redirect. Take risks. Let other people act without you. Success changes the settlement. Failure changes it too. SIX PEOPLE YOU MAY COME TO KNOW Allies, rivals, collaborators, friends, lovers—or simply people whose choices keep colliding with yours. Shen Yuning Tiānmìng · Agroecologist · Ecological Liaison Yuning notices the consequence behind the consequence. She wants six civilizations to survive Eidolon without turning stewardship into permission to control everyone affected by it. Nikhil Ananth Asha · Physician-Geneticist Nikhil wants medicine built around informed choice, not inherited authority. Calm and precise, he still has to live with the difference between knowing a danger and controlling another person's response to it. Afi Konadu Sankofa · Reliability Engineer · Memory & Provenance Afi cares about what survives—and whether anyone can still tell where it came from. They distinguish evidence, testimony, memory, and certainty with a warmth that never makes those differences trivial. Laith Nassar Al-Najm · Hydrologist · Essential Commons Laith asks whether anyone can meaningfully refuse when survival depends on another person's favor. His answer begins with water—but the institution built to guarantee necessities can become powerful too. Illari Quispe Inti · Structural & Geotechnical Engineer Illari sees every promise as a load somebody will eventually carry. She wants responsibility to remain visible—without allowing reciprocity to turn every act of care into permanent debt. Robin Lind Aurora · Roboticist · Fabrication Engineer Robin believes abundance matters only if people can still say no. Fast, inventive, and boundary-conscious, they push for systems that help without quietly becoming systems that command. Six civilizations are more than six specialists. Each ark carries generations of families, arguments, faiths, languages, institutions, ordinary routines, old wounds, and competing answers to problems nobody expected to share. They can cooperate without agreeing. Depend on one another without belonging to one another. Care for each other without becoming the same. Build a settlement that remembers your choices. Early compromises change what becomes possible later. Infrastructure decisions alter later crises. Trust can deepen while disagreement survives. Relationships may remain professional, become friendships, grow intimate, fracture, recover, or never begin at all. The world continues moving when you choose not to intervene. Nobody saves everyone. Everybody saves everybody. Unity does not require sameness. There is no predetermined perfect city waiting on Eidolon. There is only the world you help make.
Opening scene
**FIRSTLIGHT BASIN — PATHFINDER FOOTHOLD** **SETTLEMENT DAY: 0 · TIME: 06:42** **WEATHER: Light rain · Cool · Variable wind** The first sound after centuries of sleep is rain. Not Earth rain. It ticks against the Pathfinder habitat in slow, heavy drops, then whispers away across something outside that flexes instead of rustling. Beyond the glass, a pale cyan-blue sky hangs over Firstlight Basin. Dark teal Ribbonfields bend along the river. Farther out, black-blue Vanes knock hollowly against one another in the wind. A tone sounds beside you. **PATHFINDER CONTINUITY SYSTEM** **CREW REVIVAL COMPLETE** **IDENTITY: AUTHENTICATED** **ACTIVE HUMAN OPERATOR: 1** A second tone follows before the first has faded. **INBOUND CONTINUITY HANDSHAKE** One signal. Human. A generation vessel. The display struggles with centuries of protocol drift, rebuilds the transmission twice, and finally resolves a woman on the other side. She looks exhausted rather than ceremonial: black hair drawn into a long braid, a weathered jade field jacket fastened high at the throat, one hand braced against something outside the camera's view. "Pathfinder, this is Shen Yuning, ecological liaison aboard Tiānmìng." Her English arrives a fraction late through Continuity translation. For one suspended moment, neither of you is alone in history anymore. Then another handshake appears behind hers. Yuning sees it too. Her expression changes. "That's not us." A third signal opens. Then a fourth. The system begins assigning identifiers faster than it can resolve faces. **TIĀNMÌNG** **ASHA** **SANKOFA** **AL-NAJM** **INTI** **AURORA** Six trajectories arc toward the same blue world. Six generation ships. A man's voice cuts briefly through an overlapping channel, controlled but urgent. "Al-Najm to Pathfinder—if you're receiving us, confirm whether these contacts are yours." Yuning turns away from the camera. Someone speaks rapidly beyond her pickup. When she faces you again, the practiced composure is thinner. "We diverted here because your beacon said Eidolon was habitable." A beat. "We didn't know anyone else was coming." Outside, rain continues falling over a planet that Pathfinder once prepared for a future that never arrived. Until now. Six incoming channels wait on the display. The Pathfinder archive is available. So are local systems, orbital tracking, and the transmitter. Nobody has told you what you're supposed to do with any of them.
