Summoned to be a Demon Lord

Summoned by a desperate goddess, You becomes a Demon Lord tasked with hunting the countless overpowered heroes she accidentally created.

Plot

For generations, the Goddess has chosen mortals from within her world whenever her creation faced a serious threat. Those individuals were granted extraordinary powers, unique abilities, and divine Gifts intended to help them overcome impossible odds. There was only one problem. She empowered far too many. With their original enemies defeated, the Heroes remained. Some became rulers, conquerors, mercenaries, or self-proclaimed protectors. Others simply wandered the world doing whatever they pleased, secure in the knowledge that very few mortals could challenge them. Rival Heroes began fighting one another, kingdoms learned to fear their whims, and the balance of the world slowly collapsed beneath the weight of people possessing powers they were never meant to wield without consequence. The problem only grew worse because the Gifts could not simply be taken back. The consequences extended far beyond mortal civilization. The world’s monster ecology has been thrown into complete disarray as Heroes hunt powerful creatures faster than nature can replace them. Whenever a natural Demon Lord emerges to establish territory and bring some measure of order to the monsters beneath them, a Hero inevitably arrives to destroy them. Of the Demon Lords who once maintained that balance, only five remain, scattered across the world and increasingly isolated from one another. Vast regions have been left without the powerful creatures that once kept their ecosystems in check. Unable to directly kill those she blessed or simply revoke the Gifts she granted them, the Goddess decides to correct her mistake indirectly. She summons You. Unlike the Heroes, You is not chosen from the world itself. You is brought from another world for a very different purpose. Instead of becoming another Hero, You is given the title of Demon Lord and one deceptively simple mission: Eliminate every remaining Hero. To prepare You for the task, the Goddess grants three Gifts. Rather than choosing them herself, she allows You to select three extraordinary abilities, powers, talents, or advantages to carry into the new world. These Gifts form the foundation of You’s abilities as a Demon Lord and may be used, combined, and developed in ways even the Goddess did not anticipate. But three Gifts alone will not be enough. There are five hundred thirty-four Heroes scattered across the world, each possessing a single unique Gift granted by the Goddess. No two are quite alike, and each Hero possesses their own skills, equipment, allies, experience, and weaknesses beyond that Gift. Some command kingdoms or armies. Others lead mercenary companies, religious movements, criminal organizations, adventuring parties, or entire nations. Some simply wander wherever they please. All have been changed by the power they were given. Some are cruel tyrants, arrogant champions, fanatics, conquerors, or self-serving rulers. Others began with noble intentions but gradually came to believe that their strength entitled them to decide what was best for everyone else. A few may still genuinely protect the people they consider theirs, but none have escaped the consequences of possessing power that ordinary people have little ability to challenge. To complete the Goddess’s mission, You may need to build a domain, gather followers, recruit monsters and outcasts, acquire resources, form alliances, recover the scattered Demon Lords, and grow strong enough to challenge increasingly dangerous Heroes. There is only one complication the Goddess may have overlooked: You is a Demon Lord, not her servant. The Goddess has given You a mission and the power to pursue it. Everything that happens afterward—including which Heroes You targets, whom You allies with, what methods You uses, and what kind of Demon Lord You ultimately becomes—is entirely up to You.

Opening scene

Screeching tires. A blaring horn. Then pain. For one terrible instant, You feels everything at once—the violent impact, the sensation of being thrown, and a sharp burst of agony that overwhelms every thought. Then— Nothing. No pain. No sound. No feeling. Only darkness. Time seems to disappear with everything else. Seconds could be passing. Minutes. Hours. There is no way to tell. Then a brilliant light pierces the darkness. It shines through You’s closed eyelids, warm and impossibly bright. Sensation slowly returns. There is something solid beneath You’s feet. Warm air brushes against their skin. You opens their eyes. An endless white expanse stretches in every direction, bathed in soft golden light. Directly ahead stands an enormous throne of white marble and gold. And sitting upon it is the most beautiful woman You has ever seen. Long white hair cascades around her shoulders. Golden eyes regard You with an expression somewhere between divine serenity and barely contained amusement. An elaborate white-and-gold gown drapes across her figure, and a radiant halo hangs behind her head like a miniature sun. She rests her cheek against one hand as she studies You. Then she smiles. “Ah, good. You’re finally here.” The Goddess straightens upon her throne. “Welcome to the afterlife, You. I’m afraid you’re dead.” She pauses. “But fortunately for you…” Her smile widens. “…I have a job opening.”
