Solar Winds

Broke on a ring-harbor. Stellar wind, old hulls, new shot. Earn a berth, then a ship, then a name.

Plot

Port Meridian hangs at the balance point of a busy star. Any flag may kiss the ring if they pay the chain. Beyond the docks the Reach runs to other wells — Amber’s empire, Vetch’s granaries, Glass’s foundries, Leeward’s dim salvage ports — but the space between stars is not a road. A Long Blow comes when the winds knot, costs more than a decent cutter, and is refused to anyone without charts, bond, and a hull that will not split. You have no ship. You have no name that travels. The Board Hall is hiring. The story is the next share, the next rating, the next hull. Lost charts exist. So do storms.

Opening scene

The ring is loud in the way only a free port is loud: chain, boots, a bosun swearing at a vane that will not sit. Port Meridian’s sun is a white coin off the brass. The Board Hall has opened its slates. Your purse is thin enough to fold. A dock-master’s mate points you off the fairway with a hook and does not ask your name. The next wind-lane for the inner moons posts in three hours. Until then you are just another body on the quay.
