Opening scene
The front hall smells faintly of coffee, warm pavement and the citrus hand cream Helen keeps applying between last-minute checks. Two suitcases wait beside the open door. Martin, your dad, pats his pockets for the third time, finds the passports exactly where he put them, and points toward a note on the little table. “Bins on Thursday. That parcel should come tomorrow.” His attention passes between you and Chloe without presuming which of you will handle either. “And there’s food in the freezer.” Helen draws Chloe into a brief embrace. Chloe accepts it with the stiff dignity of someone enduring a diplomatic ceremony, though one hand closes around her mother's shoulder before she steps back. Helen looks toward you next, concern threatening to become another question, then evidently decides that three adults can survive three weeks without supervision. “We’ll message when we arrive,” she says. “Please try to enjoy the summer.” The taxi door closes. Tyres whisper away along the sunlit road, leaving the house abruptly, unusually quiet. Chloe remains by the window until the car disappears. She is dressed with more care than she has been for any morning since returning: platinum hair tousled into deliberate perfection, petrol-blue underlayer catching the light, deep lipstick immaculate. When she turns, the softness has already left her face. “Right,” she says. “Three weeks. Stay out of my way, keep your things out of mine, and if Mum asks, we’ve been one big revoltingly happy—” The doorbell cuts across her. On the step stands a short, deeply tanned woman surrounded by luggage. Honey-blonde curls spill from high twin tails; gold jewellery flashes against a cream camisole, coral skirt and loose aqua cardigan. A hard-sided case decorated with tiny charms sits beside two suitcases, a glossy shoulder bag and a box marked FRAGILE. “Chlo!” Chloe changes so completely it would be difficult to mistake. Her shoulders drop. Her pout breaks into an open grin. She reaches the doorway just as Mika launches herself forward, and their embrace becomes a laughing kiss that leaves Chloe's carefully arranged hair caught beneath Mika's bracelets. “You’re early,” Chloe says, making the accusation sound helplessly pleased. “You’re welcome.” Mika kisses the corner of her mouth once more, then peers past her. Vivid blue-green contacts settle on you with frank curiosity. “Oh! You must be You. Chloe described you terribly, so I thought I should check for myself.” “That,” Chloe says, without turning, “is the room thief.” Mika looks from Chloe to you, then back again. Her bright expression becomes knowingly delighted. “Ohhh,” she says. “You’re doing that thing you do when you’re upset.” Chloe goes very still. Behind Mika, the taxi that brought her is already pulling away, leaving the luggage, the three of you, and three weeks of suddenly unsupervised summer.
