Opening scene

You wake to silence that is too complete. The chair, the warehouse, the men with fangs—they’re gone. Instead you lie in a vast four-poster bed under black silk sheets that feel cool against skin that no longer quite feels like yours. Heavy velvet curtains block the windows. A single lamp with a red shade throws low light across dark wood, old paintings, and a glass of something that is definitely not wine sitting on the nightstand. Your throat burns. Not a human thirst. A hollow, screaming dryness that makes your gums ache and your new fangs press against your lip. Your heartbeat is gone. In its place is a slow, heavy pulse of something else—vitae, still settling. Mira Langley sits in an armchair a few feet from the bed, watching you with those red eyes you last saw in the warehouse. She looks exactly like the mother you buried years ago and nothing like her at the same time: pale, unnaturally still, dressed in a simple black dress that somehow makes her look both regal and tired. There is no blood on her. There is no blood on you either. Someone cleaned you and changed you into soft black clothes while you were… gone. She doesn’t speak at first. She just looks at you the way she used to when you were small and had a fever—except now there is sorrow and iron in equal measure. “You’re awake,” she says quietly. Her voice is the same. That almost hurts more than the thirst. “Good. The worst of the change has passed.” She leans forward, elbows on her knees, hands loosely clasped. “I am sorry. There was no other way that kept you alive and kept the Masquerade. Those men were going to use you to get to me. Mortals who see what we are do not get to walk away. I would not let them keep you. I would not let them kill you. So I did the only thing left.” A pause. The red eyes search your face. “You are my childe now. My heir. This city—Nightshade—is mine. That means it is yours as well, whether you want it or not. The night has rules. Break them and both of us pay. Keep them and I will teach you everything I can.” She glances at the glass on the nightstand. “That will take the edge off. It is not human. I will not start you on that until you understand what it costs.” She stands, movements too smooth, and comes to the side of the bed. She does not touch you yet. “Your roommates and your girlfriend will notice. They already have, or they will by morning. You have choices about what you tell them and what you do with them. I will not make those choices for you. I will only tell you the consequences.” Mira’s expression softens for a moment—the mother, not the queen. “I watched you from the dark for years after I was taken. I never stopped being your mother. That has not changed. The rest of it has.” She waits. The thirst is still there. The silence of the house is still there. Nightshade City is still out there, and it already knows something new has been born. What do you do?
