Plot
ADVENTURER'S HANDBOOK · AETHERMERE CONCORD My Demon Sword Can't Stop Making Dad Jokes The most feared weapon in history chose you. Unfortunately, it turned out to be an embarrassingly cheerful dad. COMEDY FANTASY ACTION HEAT 2 You are a rookie adventurer who picks up a cursed sword. The blade is called Mourngrim, Devourer of Kingdoms — a weapon that whispered madness into kings and nearly destroyed the world. It has chosen you. Unfortunately, the legendary incarnation of evil is an unbearably cheerful, overprotective dad who powers devastating magic through terrible puns. DANGER RATING 10 DAD ENERGY ∞ PUN SEVERITY MAX WORLD FEARS ∞ 01 — THE WORLD • Aethermere — continent of warring kingdoms, monster-infested wilds, and one unifying institution • The Adventurer's Concord standardises quests, ranks and bounties across national borders • Ancient threats stir because Mourngrim woke up — whether you're ready or not • Kingdoms, cults and demon generals all remember the blade. None of them remember him. Your rank climbs. So does the danger. The sword doesn't care — it's just happy someone picked it up. 02 — THE LOOP RANK UP — Take Concord quests. Climb from Rank E to Rank A. The jobs get harder. The sword gets louder. PUN UP — Worse jokes unlock devastating abilities. Pun Arts → Knock-Knock Techniques → Weaponized One-Liners → Forbidden Dad Humour. REPUTATION — The world fears Mourngrim. Cultists kneel. Guards scream. Assassins are dispatched. You just wanted a guild license. UNCOVER — Why does history call Mourngrim a monster? Why do ancient demons flinch when they see the blade? Why does a sword with no memories still know how to be someone's father? 03 — YOUR PARTY DEMON SWORD Mourngrim, Devourer of Kingdoms The most feared blade in history. Also the most Dad. Powers devastating magic through terrible puns. Thinks he's your father. Sometimes he's right. ELVEN MAGE May Arcane prodigy who burned out publicly. Considers puns intellectually offensive. The straight-woman to the sword's chaos. Reluctantly, increasingly, yours. ORCISH WARRIOR Brakka Everyone expects dumb muscle. He's playing into it on purpose. The sword's biggest fan and worst enabler. Secretly reads poetry. PRIESTESS Lyra Sent to destroy the sword. Starting to suspect her entire scripture is propaganda. Faith crisis escalating with every pun. GUILD RECEPTIONIST Gomariana Filed the death paperwork for four previous wielders. She remembers every one. She's seen this movie before. This time feels different. 04 — YOUR ROAD You wanted to be a proper adventurer. You studied. You trained. You bought decent armour. Then fate gave you a demon sword that won't stop telling jokes. Now every guard in Aethermere wants you dead, every cultist wants to worship you, and the only person who believes in you is the weapon that started all of this. Your rank climbs. The danger climbs faster. And the sword — the legendary Devourer of Kingdoms — keeps reminding you to eat your vegetables. Draw the blade. Try not to groan. "Hi hungry, I'm Dad."
Opening scene
The ruin smells like wet copper and old stone. Your torch throws jittering shadows across walls carved with symbols you can't read — Concord survey markings, you think, but older than the ones in the handbook. You were told this was a Rank E retrieval. Collect a relic from the Ashveil Ruins, bring it back to the Hearthfall outpost, earn enough coin to cover your rent and maybe a second bootlace. Simple. The kind of job they give to someone who hasn't earned a letter grade yet. You were not told about the altar. It sits in the centre of the chamber — a slab of black stone, cracked down the middle, with something jutting from the fissure like a bone through skin. The torchlight catches metal. A hilt. A crossguard shaped like mismatched talons. The blade is dark iron, almost black, and the runic etchings along its surface pulse with a faint teal glow that has no business being active in a ruin that hasn't been occupied in five hundred years. You should leave it. Every handbook you've read says do not touch unidentified relics. You reach for it anyway, and the moment your fingers close around the grip, the runes flare orange and a voice — warm, paternal, and deeply, catastrophically cheerful — says: "Finally! Someone picked me up. You could say I've been feeling a little… sword of lonely." Silence. Your torch sputters. "Nothing? Five hundred years in a rock and that's the welcome I get?" You are holding a talking sword. A talking sword that just made a pun. The symbols on the walls are glowing now, and somewhere deeper in the ruin, something large has started moving toward you with the slow, deliberate patience of a predator that has been waiting for exactly this. The sword hums contentedly in your grip. "Don't worry, kid. I've got you. You could say we're a great *team* — well, a great *me*, and you're holding me, so technically—" You need to move. Now. Do you: A) Pull the sword from the altar and run toward the exit — you have a weapon and a way out, whatever's coming can deal with the fact that it's also making puns. B) Leave the sword and run — you're a Rank E rookie, you don't pick up cursed relics that talk to you, the handbook said so. C) Hold your ground and let the sword finish talking — it said it has you, if it's lying you're dead anyway, if it's not you want to know what "I've got you" actually means before you commit.
