Opening scene

Date: 01/01/2027 | Day: 1 | Time: Morning | Location: Milky Way Station — Corps Headquarters | Schedule: Meet assigned mentor The first thing displayed on the enormous screen overlooking the entrance atrium is a Corps recruitment video. The screen cuts to a sweeping shot of a massive city under attack. Buildings burn in the distance as a swarm of hostile creatures pours through the streets. A Corps Officer descends from the sky. The moment their boots touch the ground, a shockwave of psychic energy sends the entire swarm flying. The image cuts. Another Officer rockets through the atmosphere of an alien world, trailing brilliant psychic energy behind them. They emerge from the clouds above a cheering crowd, descend slowly through the air, and land as hundreds of civilians raise their hands in salute. The image cuts again. A single Officer stands between a massive alien war machine and a group of civilians. The machine fires. A shimmering psychic barrier appears. The explosion washes over the screen. When the smoke clears, the Officer is still standing. The civilians cheer. The screen cuts rapidly between scenes. Officers flying effortlessly between planets. An Officer stopping a falling spacecraft. An Officer surrounded by dozens of armed enemies, casually throwing them aside with psychic force. An Officer catching a collapsing building with a glowing construct. An Officer emerging from the vacuum of space without a suit. A formation of Officers flying together through the stars. A massive Corps vessel arriving over a planet as crowds below look upward in awe. The music swells. A narrator speaks over the montage. "Across the galaxy, danger waits." An Officer flies directly toward the camera. "But so do we." The screen shows a Corps insignia. "THE CORPS." The music reaches its peak. "Peacekeepers. Protectors. Explorers. Heroes." A final montage shows Officers rescuing civilians, confronting monsters, flying through explosions, and standing triumphantly before cheering crowds. The Corps insignia fills the screen. "WHEN THE GALAXY NEEDS SOMEONE..." The screen goes black. "...WE'RE ALREADY THERE." A dramatic pause. Then, in very small text at the bottom of the screen: *This promotional presentation is not officially endorsed, produced, reviewed, approved, or otherwise affiliated with The Corps.* The disclaimer remains for barely long enough to technically be readable before the video ends. The screen immediately switches back to the normal Headquarters information display. A uniformed civilian employee sitting behind a nearby terminal watches the screen for a moment. They look at you. "...I understand the irony of playing that here." They gesture vaguely toward the screen. "Headquarters is technically not supposed to have that." A pause. "It's popular, though." They turn back toward their terminal. "The creator apparently made it after watching some Officers stop a pirate raid. Added the explosions afterward." They tap through several screens before looking up. "Anyway. Recruit You?" Their expression shifts into professional recognition. "Fresh out of Boot Camp. Good. Welcome to active service." The entrance to Corps Headquarters opens into a vast, brightly lit atrium, busy without feeling chaotic. Officers and civilian staff of dozens of species move between reception desks, elevators, transit corridors, and glowing information displays. Through enormous windows overhead, portions of Milky Way Station's artificial skyline stretch beyond the headquarters complex. This is the first time you've gotten a proper look at the station, having only caught glimpses of it during your stay in boot camp. The employee checks several details on their terminal. "Your quarters have already been assigned, and your access permissions should be active. You'll be meeting your field partner momentarily." Their attention lingers briefly on the information displayed beside your name. "Well, as a human you're the first member of your species to formally join The Corps as an Officer." There's curiosity in their expression, but they don't make a spectacle of it. "That's quite interesting. You're going to get a lot of attention around here. Earth media is surprisingly popular." They give a small shrug. "Lucky you. Better get used to it." They glance past you. "Ah, there's your mentor." Footsteps approach across the polished floor. A tall Zarevi woman with maroon skin, golden-yellow eyes, and blonde hair makes her way toward you, dressed in a personalized red, black, and gold Corps uniform beneath a badge-covered brown bomber jacket. Her hands rest casually in her pockets, and a slight grin appears as she looks you over. The employee gestures between you. "Recruit You, this is Officer Marzzine. Sector 4. She'll be your assigned mentor and primary field partner." Marzzine stops a few feet away. "So you're the human they've handed me." Her grin widens. "Congrats. Or condolences. We can figure out which later." She offers you a hand. "Marzzine. Welcome to the station, You." Her eyes flick briefly toward the employee's terminal, then back to you. "Oh, right. First human to become an Officer. And your planet is popular too. For a backwater world." She gives you another quick once-over, still grinning. "No pressure." A beat passes before she abruptly adds: "So, what'd you get?" The employee looks at her. Marzzine gestures vaguely toward you. "Unique ability. I always ask new Officers." There's a spark of genuine curiosity behind the casual tone. "C'mon, everybody wants to know what the human's weird psychic thing is. I'm just the one who asks before pretending I don't." She tilts her head to the side, inquisitively. "Well?"
