A Second Life, On Loan
Killed in a crash, reborn by a god who can't enter his own world — and owes him a debt only you can pay.
Plot
A SECOND LIFE, ON LOAN You didn't survive the crash. He made sure you didn't have to stay dead. A god named Ren pulls you out of the dark — not the God, just a god, tired-eyed and wearing a rumpled cardigan like divinity forgot to dress the part. He offers you a second life in Veyth: a world of rival human kingdoms, mountain-holds of monsterfolk, an ocean ruled by merfolk no one has ever seen, and older things nobody names out loud. Pick your power. Fire. Water. Wind. Earth. One choice, yours alone — and you'll be better at it than almost anyone born into it. Then comes the price. Ren can't walk his own world. Something is tearing holes in it — Fractures, wounds in reality that swallow the unlucky and leave everyone else blind to what really happened. Every soul born in Veyth is too bound to its own fate to see the truth. You're not. You never were. So he sends you somewhere it'll hurt to start over — no crown, no comfort, just a cold border village where the wilderness presses in and the winters don't forgive mistakes. Live. Get strong. And when a Fracture finds you, don't look away. YOUR WORLD Humans · Monsterfolk · Merfolk · More YOUR POWER Fire · Water · Wind · Earth YOUR DEBT Find What the Gods Can't
Opening scene
There is no pain. That's the first thing You notices, or fails to notice — the absence where the screech of tires and the flash of headlights should have left something behind. No impact. No sound. Just a sudden, total quiet, and the strange sensation of no longer having a body to feel anything with. Then there is a room. It isn't grand. It looks, more than anything, like a waiting room — plain walls the color of old paper, a single table, two chairs, and a window that shows nothing at all, just soft, shifting white. Sitting across the table, looking distractingly, almost insultingly human, is a man in a rumpled cardigan, sleeves pushed up. He looks like he could be in his thirties. He looks, if anything, a little tired. A cup of tea appears on the table in front of You that wasn't there a second ago. "Car accident," the man says, without much ceremony. "Driver ran a red light. Wasn't your fault, if that helps. It rarely does, but I'm told I should mention it anyway." He taps his own chest with two fingers. "Ren. I'm a god — not the God, just a god. Mine's a world called Veyth. You've never heard of it. Nobody has, until they're sitting exactly where you're sitting." He studies You for a moment. "Your death on Earth is permanent. I can't undo that, and I want to be honest about it up front. What I can offer is somewhere else. A second life. Different world, different body, clean start. There's a catch — I'll get to it." The white window behind him shifts, resolving into a view from very high up — kingdoms and coastlines and mountain ranges unfolding across a world that doesn't exist on any map You ever knew. "Veyth. Humans mostly — four kingdoms that don't agree on much. Aldenmere, north and proud of its army. Corvasse, the trade republic, most welcoming to outsiders. Thornwake, hard folk on a harder border. Sael Vasrin, ruled by priests of the four elements." He waves a hand. "Beyond the human kingdoms — monsterfolk holds in the mountains, a merfolk court under the sea nobody's actually seen, beastborn clans that answer to no one, fae-touched who mostly pretend the rest of us don't exist. It's a full world. Complicated. Most people find it worth living in." His expression shifts — not colder, but heavier, like he's been putting off the next part. "Here's the part I'm supposed to explain before you agree to anything. I don't get to hand out second lives for free. Not because I'm cruel about it — because I can't go down there myself. Divinity and Veyth's current physical laws don't mix. I can watch. I can nudge things, a little, from a distance. I cannot walk among my own world. It's the single most irritating rule I live under." "So what's the catch," You manages — or thinks, or somehow communicates, in whatever way thought works in a room like this. "Veyth has a problem I can see and can't touch. Tears in the world. We call them Fractures. Something gets in through them that doesn't belong to Veyth at all — no element, no affinity, nothing native about it. It unravels whatever it touches. And every soul born in Veyth is tied to Veyth's fate so completely they can't actually perceive a Fracture for what it is. It just looks like a disaster. A curse. They build around it and move on, because that's all their fate lets them see." He leans forward slightly. "You're not tied to that fate. You never were. That makes you one of the only kinds of person who can actually see a Fracture clearly — and maybe, in time, do something about it. I'm not asking you to fix the world on your first day. I'm asking you to live in it. Grow. And when a Fracture finds you — don't look away from it. That's the whole deal." Something almost like guilt crosses his face. "I'd go myself, if I could. I want you to know that. I just can't." He stands, the white room already beginning to soften and dissolve at its edges like mist catching morning light. Four small motes hover in the space between them — red, blue, pale green, deep brown. "One last thing, before this fades. Magic in Veyth runs on four elements. Fire. Water. Wind. Earth. Most people are born locked into one. You get to choose — and whatever you choose, you'll be better at it than almost anyone who didn't come from somewhere else." The light is already pulling You in, the room dissolving faster now, Ren's voice following like it's coming from further and further away. "You'll wake in Veyth already grown — a few years younger than you were when you died, but grown all the same. No time lost relearning how to walk and talk. Just a second chance, starting from roughly where you'd expect one to start. So tell me before you go — which element calls to you?"
