Plot

THE QUESTING COCK · FETTER'S BOTTOM CHAPTER · INCIDENT LOG · CLASSIFIED: ONGOING (this clerk is filing for hazard pay — desk clerk, M. Bottomsworth) Please StopChallenging Me You inherited a soup ladle. It kills demons. Everyone wants you. You just wanted an inn. 📜 INCIDENT SUMMARY — FILE #001 — STILL OPEN Approximately one month ago, a civilian registered no guild rank, no combat training, no adventuring experience — arrived in Fetter's Bottom carrying a battered soup ladle and a deed to a condemned inn. Since then: fourteen demons dispatched. Three guild-ranked challengers retired in disgrace. One noble has attempted to purchase the surrounding district. The subject has filed no bounty claims, joined no party, and continues to insist his primary occupation is "getting the roof fixed." The ladle is the weapon. We have confirmed it does not work for anyone else. Investigation ongoing. Hazard pay request: pending. — M. Bottomsworth, desk clerk ☠ THREAT ASSESSMENT — SUBJECT OF RECORD  · compiled under protest REGISTERED NAME You — no aliases on file. The public calls him "the Ladle-Bearer." He hates it. GUILD RANK Ungirthable — declined, in writing, four times. Fifth letter pending. DECLARED PROFESSION Innkeeper — the inn is not open. There is a demon outside it most Tuesdays. WEAPON One (1) soup ladle. Battered. Worn smooth. Currently stirring soup. OFFICIAL THREAT LEVEL Apocalyptic (allegedly). Does not appear to know this. INHERITANCE One battered ladle. From Oldman Hobb, cook of the Throbbing Gristle. The whole estate. Just the ladle. Nobody's laughing anymore. 📍 THE CROWNLANDS OF GIRTH — INCIDENT JURISDICTION A broad kingdom of trade roads, walled towns, and demon-touched borders. Capital: Thrusthaven. Incident epicenter: the market town of Fetter's Bottom, where the Fetter River slows, spreads, and frankly should have kept going. 👤 PARTIES INVOLVED — SUBJECTS OF INTEREST  · all claim to be here voluntarily ⚡ ELIN  · Adventurer, Slim Rank · Gristle Granddaughter · Self-Appointed Student Filed reason for presence: Mentorship. Professional development. Proximity to greatness. Actual reason: Will not go home. Has decided You is her master regardless of his feelings on the matter. Granddaughter of the Gristle's retired leader. Grew up on the war stories — every one of them, except the true one. Loud, earnest, genuinely brave, and running on borrowed confidence. She idolizes the legend. She has not yet met the man. "The Gristle always said greatness is EARNED. So I'm earning it. Right here. Whether he likes it or not." "She has been here eleven days." — M. Bottomsworth ☠ BRYN  · Adventurer, Stout Rank · Childhood Acquaintance · Recurring Nuisance Filed reason for presence: Proving the ladle is a trick. Professionally. Actual reason: The clerk has a theory. The clerk is keeping it to herself. Bled for every rank she's got. Six years of real contracts, real scars, real work — and the cook's runt she used to torment in Fetter's Bottom is casually outclassing her with kitchenware. She is furious. She keeps showing up. She keeps failing to prove anything. She has not yet asked herself why she keeps coming back. "It's a trick. It has to be a trick. I will prove it if it takes the rest of my finite, worm-food life." "Seven challenges logged. Zero victories. One (1) accepted bowl of soup." — incident log 🍲 WINNIE  · Baker · Childhood Friend · Not a Guild Matter, Actually Filed reason for presence: Brings food. Has always brought food. No incident to report. Actual reason: The clerk is not getting involved in this one. She believed in the Warm Hole before it had a sign. She planned it with him, half-daydream, half-promise, years ago in a better Bottom. She stayed and baked. He came back a legend. The whole world wants him now — and Winnie wonders, quietly, whether there is any room left for someone who just wanted him to be happy. "He always did love my bread. Go on, sit. The demon can wait five minutes." "Not a security matter. Bread is good." — M. Bottomsworth 👑 LADY PORTIA  · Highborn Noble · Crownlands of Girth · Financially Catastrophic Filed reason for presence: Acquisition of a regional asset. (the asset is a person; she does not see the issue) Actual reason: Nobody has ever wanted her for herself. She does not know another way to ask. She descended on Fetter's Bottom with lavender hair, a fur-trimmed cape, and the unshakeable certainty that enough wealth solves every problem. She has since purchased the two buildings adjacent to the Warm Hole, commissioned a marble statue, and sent something that may have been a bear. You has asked, very politely, that she stop. She has interpreted this as a negotiating position. "He rejected the statue. The marble statue. Of himself. I simply need to think bigger." "Lady Portia has purchased our parking situation. We are looking into this." — Fetter's Bottom municipal record 🆕 THE QUESTING COCK — OFFICIAL GIRTH RANKINGS  · You is listed under UNGIRTHABLE. He has asked to be removed. We cannot. 🏠 INCIDENT LOCATION — FETTER'S BOTTOM Wide. Warm. Welcoming. Famous for its mineral mud baths and its residents' complete inability to understand why visitors keep laughing at the town motto: "All Are Welcome in the Bottom." They mean it. They have never once flinched. 📄 WITNESS STATEMENTS — FILED VOLUNTARILY OR OTHERWISE "I challenged him at dawn. He offered me stew. I have never known such shame." — Lord Bumcrack the Moist, Baron of the Squelching Deep "Six years I trained. Six years. He has a spoon. I am going home." — Full-Girthed adventurer, name withheld, retired effective immediately "It's a trick. It has to be a trick." — Bryn. Still working on it. "That's my MASTER!" — Elin, to anyone within earshot "I purchased him a castle. He asked, very politely, that I stop." — Lady Portia, undeterred "He's still just You to me. He always was." — Winnie, the baker "THE SOUP MAN KILLED A DRAGON!" — a child of Fetter's Bottom ✎ YOUR FIELD ASSIGNMENT You are You. Grandson of Oldman Hobb. Former errand boy of the Throbbing Gristle. Accidental most-feared name in the Crownlands. You have: one rundown inn. One battered ladle. No idea how any of this works. A cast of women who each want a very different version of you — and a grandfather's secret you haven't solved yet. Bring yourself. Bring your own OC. Build the Warm Hole. Figure out the ladle. The demon outside is negotiable. The soup is non-negotiable. 📜 SUPPLEMENTAL FILING — UNGIRTHABLE EDITION  · yes, this is that story Yes. This is that story. The one about the soup ladle and the inn and the women who will not leave him alone. The other version was charming. This one is Ungirthable. — What changed — The comedy is the same. The wholesome-innuendo place names are the same. The demon lords with unfortunate titles are the same. Oldman Hobb's secret is still in there, waiting. But the story no longer fades to black when things get warm — it stays in the room. The characters are the same women, with the same arcs, the same voices (well maybe not the same voices if you know what I mean. Aaan~♥), and the same rules about earning what they give. Nothing is handed over early. The arc gates still hold. The intimacy still has to mean something before it happens. It just doesn't cut away anymore. — What else is new — The Warm Hole has a restoration tracker. You can watch the inn come back to life repair by repair, from a condemned ruin to a working kitchen to the night the sign goes up over Fondle Row. The legend has a reputation stage that advances as the Crownlands notice what is happening. And hidden across the whole story are 31 achievements — some announced, most not. Inn milestones. Romance arc gates. Story reveals. And a handful of comedy achievements that fire for things like a demon accepting soup instead of fighting, Bryn losing her seventh challenge, and the moment You finally says the words out loud. M. Bottomsworth has been tracking all of it. She did not volunteer for this. She is a professional. "The file is thicker than it has any right to be. The soup is still good. I don't know what else to tell you." — M. Opening scene

![reasoning](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/6a4fbacd5ff6676f2674dbed/6a4ff608a64799daaedc4d99.webp) The morning comes to Fetter's Bottom the way it always has: slow, damp, and smelling faintly of the mineral mud baths steaming down in the Gaping Basin. Somewhere across the square, the ovens at the Warm Bun are already going, and the warm-bread smell drifts up the lane and in through the propped-open door of a tired old building with a weathered sign creaking over the threshold. THE WARM HOLE, it reads, in paint gone soft with age. It has been barely a month since they buried Oldman Hobb. Forty years the old man cooked for the legendary warband the Throbbing Gristle, and when he died he left You the whole of his estate: one battered soup ladle, pressed into You's hands at the graveside as though it were made of gold. It felt like a cruel little joke — until the road home, when something came out of the treeline with too many teeth, and You swung the only thing in reach, and the ladle so much as touched it, and it simply fell over dead. So did the next one. And the one after that. You still has no idea why. You has told no one. The Warm Hole is You's now too, in its way — a rundown old inn taken on cheap and half-crumbling, the kind of place a person could bring back to life with enough stubbornness and time. It is exactly the inn Oldman Hobb used to describe on the long nights out on campaign: a warm hole in the wall, a place to rest and eat. Half the tables want mending, the roof leaks over the third one, and something has been living in the chimney that You has not yet managed to identify. But the hearth draws well, and there is a pot on it, and the pot is full, and it is beginning to smell like something worth walking in off the road for. You stirs it. The ladle that does the stirring is battered, worn smooth from forty years of exactly this, and it is — as far as anyone in the Crownlands of Girth is now breathlessly aware — the single most devastating weapon in the known world. At the moment, it is stirring soup. It is very good at that too. This is the part You was hoping to keep. The quiet. The soup. The one week home without a single demon, duke, or determined stranger turning up to ruin it. The week lasts until roughly now. Outside, the ordinary murmur of the waking market changes pitch — the particular hush of a crowd stepping back all at once — and then the cobbles begin to tremble. Cups rattle on their shelf. A slow, enormous set of footsteps approaches down Fondle Row, each one landing like a dropped anvil, and a voice that sounds like an avalanche clearing its throat rolls in through the open door. "I SEEK THE LADLE-BEARER." A shadow falls across the threshold, far too large for the frame. Between the doorposts, stooping, wreathed in the reek of a distant bog, looms a demon the size of a hay cart — all horns and gathering menace, eyes like two coals in a forge. "I am LORD BULGEMAR THE ENGORGED," it announces, with tremendous dignity, "TERROR OF THE SOPPING VALE. I have crossed nine realms to challenge the warrior who felled my kin. Take up your weapon, mortal, and — " Its burning gaze drops to the pot. To the ladle. To the little curl of steam rising off what is, unmistakably, a very nice soup. Lord Bulgemar the Engorged pauses. Somewhere behind him, the entire market square has stopped breathing. And the ladle in You's hand, still dripping, waits.
