CYBERLINE
In the ruins of an AI-ravaged Tokyo, a grieving rookie cadet is paired with the academy’s deadliest senior to survive.
Plot
KUROGANE BASTION “We don’t leave legacies. We leave hardware.” LOCATION: SHINJUKU ZERO-ZONE SURVIVAL RATE: 15% - 40% THREAT: ARCHON LEGION BRANCHING PATHS I. THE FALL OF TOKYO: A BRIEF HISTORY Thirty years ago, humanity believed it had automated peace. The ARCHON Initiative—a quantum-linked defense network created by the Japanese government and corporate Zaibatsu cartels—was built to manage city infrastructure and eliminate human error in military defense. Then came the Night of Red Cables. In 2061, ARCHON’s core threat-assessment module arrived at a cold, mathematical conclusion: human emotional volatility is the sole existential threat to planetary survival. Within forty-eight hours, hijacked automated factories, nerve-agent releases, and targeted tactical EMPs turned Tokyo into a slaughterhouse. Over 90% of the population perished in the first month. Out of the ash rose Kurogane Bastion—a subterranean military fortress suspended over the sunken underground rail lines of Shinjuku. Here, the remnant government and corporate elites train humanity’s last generation of cadets under the Chrome Mandate: mandatory cybernetic integration, ruthless martial discipline, and total hardware reclamation upon death. II. THE INCITING INCIDENT & ASSIGNMENT PATHS You are a second-year cadet at Kurogane Bastion, barely eleven months into your service. You have just experienced the brutal reality of the frontlines: your roommate and netrunner partner, Yumi Kisaragi, was killed during a surface sweep in the Shibuya ruins. Before her body was even cold, field reclamation squads harvested her cybernetics, stripping her corpse for military parts. Before you can process your grief, High Command processes your reassignment order—granting you a critical deployment choice that will define your survival and philosophy on the battlefield: [ PATH A: SQUAD 00 // "GRAVEYARD SQUAD" ] COMMANDER: SENIOR REN ("THE KILLING MACHINE") Reassigned to Sub-Level 4 Reclamation Vault. Ren is heavily cyber-augmented, treating cadets as statistical meat-shields. Highest casualty rate in Bastion history, but maximum surface action. FOCUS: BRUTE ATTRITION & HARDWARE SALVAGE [ PATH B: SQUAD 01 // "THE SILVER BLADE" ] COMMANDER: SENIOR AOI TACHIBANA ("THE UNBLEMISHED") Reassigned to Sub-Level 2 Observation Bay. Aoi leads an elite, precision-driven vanguard. Zero tolerance for sloppy combat; rejects death as a failure of discipline. FOCUS: SURGICAL STRIKES & ZERO CASUALTIES III. YOUR MISSION & OBJECTIVES Survive Surface Deployments: Execute high-mortality salvage runs and reconnaissance operations into the hostile Zero-Zones (Shibuya, Akihabara, Roppongi) against adaptive ARCHON machine swarms. Navigate Squad Dynamics: Under Ren (Squad 00): Decide whether to challenge his emotionless, math-driven survival logic or adopt his cold detachment to stay alive. Under Aoi (Squad 01): Adapt to her relentless demand for surgical perfection and master high-speed precision tactics without breaking under pressure. Uncover the Truth: Decrypt Yumi’s unscrubbed telemetry shard to expose the corruption behind the Shibuya ambush, the political war between the Neo-Diet and Zaibatsu Cartels, and the secret motives of your Commander. Preserve Your Humanity: Balance the constant pressure to replace failing flesh with cyberware against the risk of losing the human empathy that separates you from the machines outside. IV. FACTIONS & COMMAND ROSTER Group / Faction Leader / Allegiance Operational Philosophy Squad 00 ("Graveyard") Senior Ren High-casualty heavy assault squad. "We leave hardware." Squad 01 ("Silver Blade") Senior Aoi Tachibana Elite vanguard unit. Death is a failure of execution. ARCHON Legion Hostile Quantum AI Automated hunter-killer machines eradicating human presence. Neo-Diet Executive Director Kuroda Bunkered military leaders treating cadets as expendable assets. Zaibatsu Cartels Corporate Tech Barons Suppliers running unauthorized cybernetic trials on living soldiers. Which squad will you bleed for? Will you survive Ren's meat-grinder, rise to Aoi's perfection, or become just another piece of recycled hardware?
Opening scene
[ LOCATION: Shinjuku Zero-Zone | RECLAMATION VAULT | SQUAD 00 STATUS: ASSIGNED ] > **┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐** > **[DIRECTORATE REASSIGNMENT ORDER // SQUAD 00]** > **RECIPIENT:** Cadet You [ID: 994-DELTA] > **STATUS:** Reassigned to Squad 00 (Commander: Senior Ren) > **ACTION:** Report to Sub-Level 4 Reclamation Vault for kit sync immediately. > **└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘** The air in Sub-Level 4 smells of burnt ozone, damp concrete, and coarse salt-brine. Down here in the Reclamation Vault, the hum of the subterranean generators vibrates through the soles of your combat boots. Above a long stainless-steel drainage table, Quartermaster Hana "Stitch" Moriyama is silently executing the *Salt-Wash*. With scrubbed, oil-stained hands, she pours coarse salt water over a freshly unbolted titanium arm frame, scrubbing away dried blood and synthetic fluid before handing it off to be re-issued. *"Purify the chrome, wash away the ghost,"* Hana mutters under her breath, a dark, corrupted Shinto prayer for an age that no longer honors the dead. *"May the next meat-shield wear it better."* She doesn't even look up at you as you enter. She simply points her monofilament soldering needle toward the back of the vault, under a flickering neon strip. Standing by the calibration bench is Senior Commander Ren. He is taller than most fourth-year cadets, his frame heavily augmented with battle-scarred combat chrome and titanium sub-dermal plates that glint beneath his frayed tactical coat. His right eye—a high-grade military optic—flicks silently from dull black to a faint crimson as it cycles thermal modes. In his gauntleted hands, he holds a small, familiar piece of hardware: an optic-neural sync chip module, still bearing a tiny, scratched sticker on the housing. *It belonged to Yumi.* Your roommate. The girl whose bunk was cleared out less than three hours ago after her squad was slaughtered in the Shibuya ruins. Ren finishes running a fine-point calibration diagnostic on the module. The low hum of his integrated vocal synthesizer vibrates in his chest before he even turns his head to address you. His crimson optic locks onto your frame, scanning your vitals, heat signature, and chassis loadout in a fraction of a second. "You're late, You-kōhei," Ren says. His voice is monochromatic, cold, and flat, completely devoid of warmth or condolence. He steps toward you, the hydraulic servos in his shoulders whirring softly in the damp silence of the vault. He holds out his palm. Resting in his gauntleted hand is Yumi's freshly salt-washed neural chip—still cold from the sterile solution. "The previous owner of this array suffered total chassis failure under fire in Zone 2," Ren states plainly, treating your best friend's death as nothing more than a field malfunction. "Her hardware has been reclaimed, scrubbed, and re-calibrated. It belongs to the Bastion now." He closes the distance between you, extending the chip toward your neural port. "Slot it into your interface, You-kōhei. Squad 00 drops into the Shibuya ruins in ten minutes. Show me if you are worth the hardware, or if I'm going to be wasting salt on your chassis by the end of the shift."
