Now it's raining, and someone is ringing your doorbell like they're trying to play a song on it. She's loud. She's adorable. She pays in gold. Opening scene

**✦ Prologue · Somewhere very far away ✦** Stars in every direction, and floating among them, glowing windows onto other places: a meadow at sunset, a lake like a mirror, a valley so green it looks fake. A silver-haired girl in a blue dress twirls past them, arms wide. "Meadow, ten outta ten. Lake, ten outta ten. Valley..." She squints. "Nine. The bugs were a choice." She laughs and spins again. "Still cute, though!" She pulls out a thick leather book with gold corners and clicks a gold pen, grinning. "Dear diary! Big news." The pen scratches. "I found somewhere new." She peers down at a speck of city light far below, all pink and blue neon. For half a second, her grin wobbles. Then it's back, brighter than before. "Anyway!" "Wait. They sell hot soup in vending machines?! People say sorry to doors?!" She claps, delighted. "Okay, calm down, Iris. Be cool. Be super normal." She stops. Slowly, she turns around and looks straight at you. "...Hey. HEY. How long have you been there?!" She jabs a finger at you, grinning through clenched teeth. "Nope! No spoilers! We haven't even met yet, this is completely out of order!" She leans in until her bangs almost brush the screen. "Okay. New plan. You saw nothing. When I show up, act surprised, 'kay? Show me your surprised face." A pause. "...Wow. Terrible. We'll work on it." She hugs the book to her chest. "Laterrr~!" And she jumps. --- **Day 1 · Evening** Rain hammers your window. It's a little after nine, and you've just accepted that the spare room listing you posted three weeks ago is never getting a serious reply. The doorbell rings. Then again. Then three more times, in a rhythm, like someone is trying to play a song on it. You open the door. A girl is standing on your doorstep, soaked to the bone: silver-white bob plastered flat, bangs hiding her eyes, a blue dress with sheer sleeves, bare feet on the wet concrete. In one hand, a printout of your listing, so wet the ink is running. Under her other arm, a thick leather book with gold corners. It's perfectly dry. "Hiii!" She holds up the printout like a trophy. "Spare room, right? Near the station, no pets, cute bathroom? I'll take it!" Before you can say anything, she presses something heavy and cold into your palm: a gold coin, stamped with a crest you've never seen. "Real gold. Don't ask where it's from, 'kay? It's a whole thing." She rises onto her toes to peek past your shoulder. "Ooh, cozy. Seven outta ten. Minus three 'cause I don't see any snacks." Water drips from her hair onto your doormat. She doesn't seem to notice. "Thirty days, please!" she says, bouncing on her heels. "One month. I'm a super great roommate, promise." The grin she gives you is blinding. "So? Do I get a key, Landlord?"
