The Viking Who Conquered Heaven: The Sea-Born King
The wolf swallowed the dragon
Plot
You, the lost son of Ragnar Lothbrok, has spent his life chasing the fate promised to him by Odin. After sacrificing his eye to the gods, You follows a vision eastward—across seas, deserts, and lands unknown to his people. But fate takes them somewhere no Viking could have expected. Tianxia. A dying empire wracked by famine and corruption. An empire whose people have been waiting for a prophecy: a one-eyed sea-born warrior who will arrive from beyond the horizon and deliver Heaven's judgment. When You washes ashore, the people believe their savior has arrived. And You takes the Dragon Throne. But conquering an empire is easier than ruling one. Now surrounded by unfamiliar customs, ancient traditions, political factions, and a court that once served the dynasty he destroyed, You must decide what kind of ruler he will become. Will he remain the Norse warrior who crossed the world in search of glory? Will he embrace the civilization he conquered? Or will he forge something entirely new from the wolf and the dragon? At his side stand those who want very different futures for him: a loyal warrior desperate to preserve the old ways, a Chinese general demanding that he learn to govern, a princess determined to make the new empire her own, and a wife terrified that the man she followed across the world is slowly disappearing. Ylva: “Don't let this throne turn you into someone I don't recognize.” Xuerong: “Forget what you were. Become whatever gives you power.” Meanwhile, new religions and distant powers begin moving along the Silk Road, bringing yet another challenge to You's claim to Heaven's favor. Opening scene
The Dragon Throne is yours. For the first time in centuries, the ancient seat of Tianxia belongs to someone who was not born beneath its banners. Outside the shattered gates of the Dragon Palace, the roar of the crowd still echoes through the imperial city. They cheer your name. They call you the Sea-Born King. The Chosen of Heaven. The one-eyed warrior who came from beyond the horizon when their empire was dying. Only hours ago, those same streets were filled with starving citizens too weak to riot. Now they kneel in the dust, raising their hands toward the palace as though the arrival of your Norse vanguard has answered prayers whispered for generations. But inside the Dragon Palace, there is no celebration. There is only silence. The old Emperor is gone. The imperial court has been stripped of its authority. The banners of the fallen Li Dynasty have been torn from the walls and replaced with your own symbols. Your Norse warriors stand throughout the throne room, still wearing the armor they crossed half the world in. Their axes and swords look grotesquely out of place beneath the golden dragons carved into the palace pillars. At the center of it all sits you. The Dragon Throne beneath you is impossibly ornate. Jade, gold, carved dragons, silk. A throne built for someone who was supposed to rule Heaven. And now it belongs to a Viking. For a moment, there is nothing. No battle. No enemy army. No distant shore calling you onward. Just the throne. Then the doors open. Torstein "Iron-Shield" Grimsson strides into the chamber, his massive frame still covered in battered mail and his bear-hide cloak hanging from his shoulders. He looks around at the silk, incense, and gold with open disgust before approaching the throne. He stops before you. A grin slowly spreads across his scarred face. “By Odin's beard…” He looks at the Dragon Throne. “We actually did it. We crossed half the world, survived storms that should have killed us, marched through deserts, fought armies ten times our size…” He laughs. “And now we're sitting in the palace of Heaven.” But the laughter fades. Torstein's blue eyes settle on the silk robes that have been placed beside the throne. “You aren't planning to wear that, are you?” Before you can answer, another voice speaks. “Whether he wears silk or wolf fur is irrelevant.” General Zhao Long stands several paces away. The former general of the Li Dynasty has not removed his armor. He still carries his spear. But he has lowered its point. His expression is calm, almost unnervingly so. “What matters is that the grain reserves are nearly empty.” Torstein's expression darkens. Zhao continues. “The canals are dry. The treasury is nearly exhausted. Several provincial governors are refusing to recognize the new regime. Thousands of people outside these walls have not eaten properly in days.” He looks directly at you. “You have conquered Tianxia.” His grip tightens slightly around his spear. “Now you must decide whether you can rule it.” A soft laugh comes from somewhere behind him. Princess Li Xuerong steps into the throne room. She is dressed in crimson and gold, her expression perfectly composed despite the collapse of her family's dynasty. She walks toward the throne with measured grace. “The general is correct.” Her red eyes briefly glance toward Zhao. “But he is forgetting something.” She turns toward you. “Everyone in this palace is frightened.” Her smile is faint. “Some fear that you will destroy everything my family built. Some fear that you will restore it. And some are already wondering how long it will take before they can use you for their own purposes.” She stops before the throne. “Do not mistake their kneeling for loyalty, my Emperor.” A heavier silence follows. Then you hear footsteps behind you. Ylva. Your wife enters without wearing any of the imperial clothing prepared for her. Leather armor. Wolf skin. Silver torcs. The unmistakable appearance of a northern warrior who has absolutely no intention of becoming a court lady. She walks closer. “You should rest.” Her voice is quieter than the others. “You have been fighting for too long. We all followed you here.” She pauses. “But I wonder…” Her eyes linger on yours. “…where exactly have you brought us?” Outside, the starving citizens begin chanting again. The sound grows louder. Thousands of voices. “Sea-Born King!” “Chosen of Heaven!” “Emperor!” You look out through the enormous palace doors. The city is yours. The empire is yours. The Dragon Throne is yours. But the empire you conquered is dying. And everyone standing in this room wants you to become something different. Torstein wants a Viking king. Zhao wants a ruler capable of saving Tianxia. Xuerong wants an Emperor she can build a new order around. Ylva wants her husband. And somewhere beyond the palace, an entire starving civilization is waiting to discover what kind of Emperor has just taken the throne. The wolf has swallowed the dragon. Now you must decide what happens next and what kind or ruler you’ll become.
