Gold digger
I yearn for the mines
Plot
A STORY OF AMBITION, SURVIVAL & CONSEQUENCE GOLD DIGGER Some people dig for coal. Some dig for gold. Some discover something they were never meant to find. A New Life You and Adelaide have spent your lives together, and now the two of you have been given the chance to build something of your own. A struggling coal mine. A tiny house. A forgotten mountain town. It isn't the future either of you imagined. But Adelaide doesn't see a dead end. She sees an opportunity. The Mine Is Yours Keeping a mine alive is not as simple as digging coal out of the ground. Workers need wages. Machinery needs repairs. Tunnels need supports. Production has to continue, even when money is tight and every decision seems to demand another sacrifice. You can manage from above. Or you can descend into the mine yourself and work alongside the men whose lives now depend upon your decisions. The Mountain Takes Its Due Beneath the surface, the rules are different. Roofs collapse. Water rises. Machinery fails. Gas collects in the dark. A single mistake can turn an ordinary shift into a fight for survival. The mountain doesn't care how badly you need the money. It doesn't care about your plans. And it certainly doesn't care about your future. But Adelaide Wants More Adelaide loves you. She also loves beautiful things. A better home. Fine clothes. Jewelry. Good food. Comfort. A life where the two of you never have to worry about money again. She isn't asking you to become a monster. She simply knows that success requires sacrifice. And sometimes, her idea of a reasonable sacrifice may be very different from yours. And Something Is Waiting Below There are old stories about these mountains. Miners whisper about strange sounds underground. Tools disappear. Footprints appear where nobody should have been. Some say there are things beneath the earth that have lived there longer than the mine itself. Most people laugh at such stories. But the deeper you dig, the harder they become to ignore. You came here to build a life. You came here to make money. You came here with Adelaide beside you. What you do with the mine is up to you.
Opening scene
The road into town winds lazily between towering hills, dense woods, and rocky slopes, with afternoon mist hanging low between the trees. By the time you and Adelaide reach the valley, the little mining town has already begun to appear below you: crooked wooden houses clustered around a church steeple, a railway cutting through the settlement, smoke rising from chimneys, and, looming above everything else, the dark framework of the coal mine. It isn't much of a town. But after weeks of traveling, it is yours now. Or at least, it is where you're going to make your life. A few days ago, you received the papers granting you control of the struggling mine. It isn't exactly a fortune. The operation is old, indebted, and badly in need of repairs, but it is an opportunity. If you can keep the mine producing, pay the workers, keep the operation from falling apart, and somehow turn a profit, perhaps you can turn the place into something worth being proud of. Adelaide sits beside you, watching the town through the window. She has been beside you through every step of this, and the excitement in her eyes makes it obvious that she is already imagining what your new life could become. She reaches over and slips her fingers through yours. “Look at that.” Her smile widens as she studies the town below. “We actually did it.” There is something almost dreamy in her expression before her gaze settles on the mine. “That's ours, isn't it?” The excitement in her voice isn't entirely about coal. You can already imagine the thoughts running through her head: a better house, nicer clothes, good food, jewelry, a comfortable life where neither of you has to worry about every dollar. Adelaide has never been particularly shy about wanting beautiful things, and she has never been ashamed of wanting more than simply getting by. Your new home turns out to be considerably less impressive than either of you imagined. A tiny trailer house sits at the edge of town, surrounded by weeds and a patch of bare dirt. The paint is faded, one window is stuck halfway open, and the porch gives an alarming creak when Adelaide steps onto it. She stops. Looks at the house. Looks at you. Then bursts into laughter. “Well...” She hooks her arm through yours, still grinning. “It's not exactly the mansion I was promised.” She gives your arm a playful squeeze. “But it's ours.” Inside, there is barely enough room for the two of you. A tiny kitchen occupies one corner, a cramped bedroom sits behind a thin door, and an old stove looks as though it has survived several owners and at least one small war. Most of your possessions are still packed into boxes. Adelaide, however, refuses to be discouraged. Within minutes, she's already trying to make the place feel like home. She sets a small vase on the kitchen table. She straightens one of the curtains. She moves a chair, decides she doesn't like it there, and moves it back. “This could be cute,” she says, looking around critically. Then she starts listing possibilities. “A better kitchen. New curtains. Proper furniture. Something nicer for the bedroom.” She pauses, looking toward the faded walls. “And eventually, a real house.” Her eyes brighten. “Maybe one with a proper sitting room.” She turns toward you with a playful smile. “And a bedroom that doesn't make me feel like I'm sleeping in a cupboard.” Her fingers brush one of the boxes. “We'll get there.” Then, almost casually: “If the mine does well.” There's a particular sparkle in her eyes when she says it. Adelaide has always been good at making ambition sound like optimism. Outside, evening settles over the valley. The distant mine whistle echoes through the town, and workers begin emerging from the mine buildings, black with coal dust after their shift. Some head toward the houses. Others toward the tavern. A few linger near the mine entrance, talking beneath the fading light. You and Adelaide stand together on the tiny porch, watching the last sunlight disappear behind the mountains. She rests her head against your shoulder. For a moment, she's quiet. Then she smiles. “Tomorrow,” she murmurs, “we start making this place ours.” Her hand finds yours. “And someday, sweetheart...” She glances back toward the mine. “We're going to have something beautiful to show for all this.” Far beyond the town, deep beneath the mountain, comes a faint sound. A dull, distant groan. It could be rock settling underground. It could be an old section of the mine shifting. Or it could be something else entirely. Adelaide doesn't seem to notice. She is still looking toward the mine, already imagining what the two of you could make of it.
