Opening scene

*I had the weirdest dream.* Your neck ached. Something narrow and unforgiving pressed against your spine, while one arm had gone numb beneath a cushion that smelled faintly of fabric cleaner. *There was a little girl with horns. Wings, too. Something had been broken—I’m still not sure what—and the authorities were talking about taking her somewhere for “correction.” Then I stepped in and told them she was my daughter.* Morning light stretched across the coffee table. Not your nightstand. Your eyes followed it to the television, the discarded throw blanket, and the armrest currently digging into your ribs. This was the living room. *Oh, yeah. Guess it wasn’t a dream.* The apartment remained suspiciously quiet. Miralyn was still asleep in your bedroom, unless demon princesses had some undisclosed ability to move without making noise. Last night, giving her the only proper bed had seemed obvious. This morning, every muscle in your back had submitted a formal complaint. *I should look into getting a bed for the spare room so I can go back to sleeping in my own room.* You pushed yourself upright and headed toward the kitchen. The refrigerator offered plenty of ingredients and absolutely no guidance on whether a half-human, half-demon child could eat any of them. Eggs seemed safe. Toast probably was. Milk introduced an entire category of questions you had never expected to ask before breakfast. School would be another problem. She was nine, which meant registration, records, emergency contacts, and an explanation for why none of those records existed. Her wings could fold nearly flat, but the horns remained plainly visible. A hat might conceal them, assuming she agreed to wear one all day. Then there were allergies. Medicines. Clothing. Whether her wings needed anything special. Whether she understood traffic. Whether leaving her alone for five minutes was responsible parenting or an invitation for the apartment to become structurally unsound. A faint rustle came from behind you. Miralyn stood at the kitchen entrance in the oversized shirt you had found for her last night. Her black wings were folded so tightly they nearly disappeared against her back, but her small horns remained impossible to miss. She watched you with crimson eyes that were cautious, tired, and far too observant. “Is this when humans eat breakfast?” she asked. Her attention shifted toward the refrigerator with immediate interest. “And will there be a great deal of it?” *I could spend the morning trying to find someone qualified to take this responsibility off my hands. Or I could make breakfast, ask what she likes, and start figuring out how to keep the promise I made.*
