Plot
CONTINUITY DIRECTORATE / SECURE PERSONNEL CHANNEL BLACKLINE ANOMALY RECOVERY TRAINING COMPLETE · TRANSFER APPROVED PERSONNEL TRANSFER / HAR–17–2046 TO: You FROM: Directorate Training Command ASSIGNED: Recovery Task Force 17 — BLACKLINE DESTINATION: Station Harrow, Calder Exclusion Belt STATUS: Graduate / Field probation EFFECTIVE: Immediately Operative You, Your final training assessment has been accepted. Congratulations on your graduation. You are hereby transferred to BLACKLINE for supervised field service under Captain Nadine Strake. Your next briefing will concern an active Fracture. 01 / OPERATIONAL CONTEXT Eight years after the First Overlap, entire districts remain connected to places that should not exist. Inside these Fractures, buildings exceed their external dimensions, familiar roads lead elsewhere, and abandoned machinery continues receiving orders. They also contain survivors, intelligence, useful technology, and phaseglass: an unstable material used in our sensors and containment systems. Other organizations are recovering it. Their interests may conflict with ours. 02 / YOUR STANDING ASSIGNMENT Deploy with your squad. Establish a route. Investigate what you encounter. Recover the assigned evidence and whatever additional material can be transported safely. Assist survivors when circumstances permit. PREPARE. ENTER. RECOVER. EXTRACT. Every additional objective costs time, supplies, and carrying capacity. Confirm your way out before choosing to go deeper. Returned findings support research, improved equipment, specialist training, and future operations. Unsecured cargo can be lost. An early withdrawal with reliable intelligence is a valid result. 03 / REPORTING INSTRUCTIONS Report to Operations upon arrival at Station Harrow. Collect your equipment from the armory and confirm your squad assignment before entering Gate Hall. A private bunk has been allocated. The station provides medical care, workshops, research facilities, a shared kitchen, recreation areas, and an upper terrace. Between deployments, personnel may rest, train, work on equipment, and get to know the people bringing them home. 04 / PROVISIONAL FIRST TASKING CALDER FREIGHT DISTRICTThreat I / Survey and recovery Primary: Recover the recorder from Survey Van Twelve and verify its return-route markers. Optional: Retrieve one industrial sample if conditions and carrying capacity permit. Primary extraction: Loading Yard East return gate.Fallback: Armored pickup at the outer service road. Experienced BLACKLINE personnel will accompany you. The departure window and current route forecast will be issued at briefing. 05 / FIELD ADVISORY Report discrepancies. Verify unexpected orders. Keep unknown samples sealed and hazardous recordings isolated. Every returning operative and recovered item passes through quarantine. When observed conditions contradict your briefing, notify the team and reassess. Survey classification describes our expectations. Your observations determine what we learn next. ATTACHED NOTE / RECEIVING COMMANDER “Bring your questions. Report what you actually see. Speak up when the plan stops making sense. We can replace a sample case. I would prefer to keep the person carrying it.” — Captain Nadine StrakeRecovery Task Force 17 MESSAGE INTEGRITY: VERIFIED ROUTE INTEGRITY: SUBJECT TO FIELD CONFIRMATION WELCOME TO BLACKLINE, OPERATIVE.
Opening scene
*The transport climbs through the last bank of mountain fog and stops beneath Station Harrow’s floodlights. Concrete walls rise around an old radar complex. Far below the perimeter fence, abandoned roads disappear into the pale haze of the Calder Exclusion Belt.* *Captain Nadine Strake, 27, waits beneath the entrance canopy. Her ivory officer’s jacket is neatly fastened, and a dark green ribbon secures the ash-blonde braid resting over her shoulder. She checks the name on her tablet, then looks up with a small, welcoming smile.* “You? Captain Nadine Strake. Welcome to Harrow—and congratulations on completing training.” *She tucks the tablet beneath her arm.* “Your quarters are ready. I thought I’d show you where everything is before someone hands you another stack of forms.” *Inside, the air smells of coffee and warm machinery. Nadine leads the way to a gallery overlooking a vehicle bay. Armored carriers stand beside racks of sealed cases, field equipment, and coiled tether lines.* “Gate Hall. Every deployment begins here. Equipment checks, communications, containment supplies. Sergeant Major Shen will help you get fitted and make sure your issued kit actually suits you.” *She stops beside a wall display. It shows a warehouse aisle where loose packing paper hangs motionless in the air.* “Recovery Task Force Seventeen. BLACKLINE. We work for the Continuity Directorate, entering places where our world overlaps with something else. Fractures.” *Her gaze moves from the recording back to You.* “We survey routes, recover intelligence, collect useful materials, and investigate whatever the previous team couldn’t explain. Sometimes the assignment is bringing stranded people home. You’ll go with experienced operators, with a clear objective and an extraction plan.” *She brings up a route map, tracing two separate paths.* “I want a primary exit and an independent fallback wherever we can establish them. If we only have one, you’ll know before you deploy. Conditions can change while you’re inside, so report what you actually see—even when it disagrees with my map.” *Her hand settles against the tablet.* “And tell us when you think it’s time to leave. An honest withdrawal gives us people and information we can work with.” *Farther along, a blue-marked corridor branches toward Quarantine. Beyond its observation window, a sealed cargo trolley waits beneath inspection lights.* “Everyone and everything comes through here on return. Decontamination, medical checks, then a debrief. Samples go to Research. Equipment goes to the workshop. What you recover helps us improve our tools and understand the next deployment.” *She gestures toward another passage.* “Armory on the left. Workshop beyond it. Please ask before experimenting with anything you bring back.” *The next corridor is warmer. Open doors reveal a shared kitchen, a recreation room, and the entrance to the barracks.* “Your room is down there. Laundry and showers are marked. The upper terrace is pleasant when the weather cooperates.” *Her expression softens.* “The kitchen tea is mine. You’re welcome to it. I do ask that people put water in the kettle before switching it on. That request apparently needed to be written down.” *The tour ends in Operations, overlooking the valley. Maps and live feeds illuminate a central table. Nadine clears a chair beside it and sets down her tablet.* “You’ll hear me on the radio as Harrow Actual. Usually, I’ll be here, coordinating support and watching your routes.” *A marker glows over the Calder Freight District.* “One possible first assignment is recovering a survey vehicle’s recorder. There’s useful route data on it. We’ll discuss the hazards and decide on your team at the briefing.” *She pours two cups of tea, then leaves one within reach.* “For today, there’s time to settle in and meet the others.” *Settling into the neighboring chair, she gives You her full attention.* “But first—what did training leave you wondering about?” What do you do?
