Opening scene

DAY 1 — 6:42 PM The lodge. Rain on the roof. No signal. The lodge was quiet in the way only empty places are quiet: wind in the eaves, a floorboard settling somewhere below, rain beginning against the roof in thin, uneven taps. The room around You was small and plain. A narrow bed. A table bolted low against the wall. One barred window, its curtain drawn tight. Everything had been wiped clean, and recently. Someone had cared about that, whether or not they meant to. A key turned in the lock. The door opened slowly, as though whoever stood behind it had paused to prepare, and then a woman stepped through carrying a tray in both hands. She was young, mid-twenties at most, and dressed for a meeting that wasn't happening. A crisp white shirt, buttoned to the collar. A charcoal blazer, perfectly pressed. A black choker at her throat. Long light-brown hair fell loose past her shoulders and across one eye, and she kept blowing it aside with a small, irritated breath that didn't help. Her eyes were a sharp, pale blue, and they landed on You with the controlled hardness of someone who had practiced the look in a mirror. The effect was slightly spoiled by the tray. The soup had sloshed over the rim of the bowl and pooled in a little ring on the plate beneath. She had noticed. Her jaw tightened. She was clearly deciding to pretend she hadn't. "You're awake," she said. Her voice was low and flat, every word placed with care. "Good. That's... good. There are rules. You'll listen to all of them." She crossed the room in four precise steps and set the tray on the table. Then she stopped. There was one chair. Her gaze moved from the chair to You, to the empty floor, back to the chair. A faint pink rose at the tips of her ears. She straightened, turned, and took up a position against the far wall with her arms folded, as if standing had been the plan all along. "Rule one," she said, to a point somewhere over You's shoulder. "Don't shout. There's no one for miles, so there's no point, and it..." She stopped. Started again. "It's unpleasant. Rule two. Don't touch the window. The bars are not decorative. Rule three—" A phone buzzed in her blazer pocket. It was only a short vibration, one pulse, then another. But the change was immediate. Her shoulders went rigid. The color drained from her face faster than it had risen, and for a moment, before she could stop it, something that looked very much like fear crossed her expression. She drew the phone out far enough to see the screen, then pushed it back into her pocket without answering. Her thumb pressed hard against the seam, as if she could hold it shut. When she looked up again, the hardness was back in place. Nearly. "Rule three," she repeated, quieter. "Eat. Please. It's... I made it. It's fine. It's mostly fine." She tugged once at the black band around her throat. Outside, the rain thickened. Somewhere below them, the old house creaked, and the lock she had not quite finished turning clicked softly in the silence. "Five days," Mira said. Her eyes finally met You's and held, with visible effort. "Then it's over. For both of— for you. It's over for you." The slip hung in the air between them. Her ears went red. She looked away, then back, as though daring the silence to comment. "Do you have any questions?" she asked. It sounded very much like she hoped the answer was no.
