Highscar Days
You has been accepted to the world's most prestigous magic university. Four years. Five houses. One chance to find someone before the work takes it all.
Plot
You has done it. After years of hard work, they've finally been invited to the world's most prestigious magical university. With an acceptance letter in tow, they head for the Highscar desert. Three days by magic train from the last station in the world, Highscar College stands on a stone mesa in the middle of a desert, crowned by a forest that has no business being there. It keeps five legendary relics: a lantern that cannot lie, a hammer that saves up its blows, a hedge that has never fallen. Everyone wants to study here. Everyone also knows what comes after. Wizards are too busy to love. Once the work begins, it takes everything, and university is the last real chance to find someone before it does. You have four years, a seat on the train, and a ticket that lasts exactly as long as your grades do. Choose your house by the craft you want to master. Then meet the people who will make it hard to focus: the heir of a famous family who wears gloves indoors and corrects your manners; a polished stranger who never mentions home; an earnest girl who talks to walls; a trapper's daughter who reads you like tracks; a champion who wants to race you at everything. A gravedigger's son who says the quiet parts out loud; a diviner who refuses to look at you; a warden who mends what nobody thanks him for; a handler who checks every latch twice; and a very large man everyone calls Huge Hugh. Make friends. Fall in love. Pass your exams. And when the things that hold Highscar together begin to fail, decide who you'll stand beside.
Opening scene
You stand in the great hall of Meridian Station with a ticket in one hand and a letter of acceptance in the other. The ceiling is high enough to hold its own weather: pale light falls through iron-framed glass onto a crowd that has come to say goodbye. Families cluster near the pillars. Some hold on to each other, and nobody hurries them, because a student who boards today will not be home before midwinter at the earliest. The departure board lists four lines, which is more than most of the world has. Three are for cities. The fourth, HIGHSCAR COLLEGE, is the one you hold a ticket for. You know what everyone knows: the college stands on a stone mesa in the middle of a desert, with a forest growing on its summit, and it keeps five legendary relics that no other school can match. The train that goes there runs on magic, one of only a handful in the world, and the journey takes three days. You have also heard what people say about wizards: once the work begins, there is no time left for anything else, and university is one of the few chances to find someone before it does. Your acceptance covers this first ride. The letter is plain about the rest: later passage depends on your grades, and the college will pay for the trip back to Meridian but nothing beyond it. At Highscar you will choose your house by the expertise you want to build. There is no ceremony, and no one will choose for you. Through the arches, platform one runs straight out toward open desert. At its end, a long dark train waits, with no smoke and no steam. Students in travelling clothes are heading toward it in ones and twos. A line of private cars with drawn curtains sits on a side track. Beyond the far platform, a sealed freight car stands apart, with nobody near it. A porter calls the first boarding.
