After The Capes

They save the city. You clean up after them.

Plot

AFTER THE CAPES They save the city. You clean up after them. When superheroes fight, everybody watches the sky. The cameras follow the capes. The crowds cheer when the villain goes down. Someone gets the perfect shot for tomorrow's front page. Then the heroes leave. This is a modern Mediterranean coastal megacity that has lived with superheroes for more than a century. Towers are reinforced. Capes have flight codes. Schools and workplaces run metahuman emergency drills. Advertisers sell around heroes, villains and the damage they leave behind. The city has adapted. Mostly. Somebody still has to explain why a car is sitting inside a restaurant. Somebody has to find sixty displaced tenants somewhere to sleep. Somebody has to tell the shop owner whether the hero who destroyed his business is actually liable for it. That's where you come in. METAHUMAN INCIDENT RECOVERY Official title: Metahuman Incident Recovery Officer Everyone just calls you a Cleaner. Superhero damage is rarely normal. Gravity can leave cars hanging from office towers. Teleporters can put things where things were never meant to fit. Psychic incidents can leave an apartment building full of strangers hearing thoughts nobody wanted shared. Yesterday's emergency manual is usually useless by Tuesday. You'll deal with exhausted emergency crews, furious civilians, celebrity heroes, lawyers, insurers, officials, reporters, contractors... ...and occasionally the villain everyone thought had already been taken away. Some heroes stay behind and help. Some disappear before anyone can hand them the bill. Some insist the crater technically wasn't their fault. THE FIGHT WAS THEIR PROBLEM. WHAT COMES AFTER IS YOURS. Most of the time, strange wreckage is exactly what it looks like: the ridiculous collateral damage of people who can bend physics. But every now and then, something genuinely doesn't add up. Evidence the official report forgot to mention. Technology nobody admits exists. Damage that doesn't match the powers supposedly involved. Or a hero who suddenly becomes very interested in what you write down. YOUR SUPERVISOR Mateo Álvarez Senior Operations Supervisor Seventeen years as a Cleaner taught Mateo two things: The manual exists for a reason. The disaster probably hasn't read it. Mateo assigns your incidents, finds resources when everything goes wrong, argues with departments you'd rather never speak to and expects you to explain whatever creative interpretation of procedure you used afterward. Retirement doesn't particularly interest him. What does interest him is training the person who will eventually take his chair — and making sure they're better at the job than he ever was. He is patient with almost everything. Superheroes making excuses for avoidable collateral damage are the notable exception. His standing advice: “Fix what matters first. Document everything else.” BETWEEN YOU AND THE CAPES Élodie Marchand Wardlight • Superhero Liaison Élodie has stood inside collapsing buildings and made decisions where a few seconds meant lives. She has also stayed afterward. Now Wardlight serves as the official bridge between active superheroes and the people responsible for cleaning up their victories. She believes heroes need the freedom to make impossible decisions. She also believes wearing a cape doesn't excuse you from what happens afterward. Hero accountability is why she took the job. The complication is that she understands her fellow capes so well that sometimes she tries a little too hard to excuse them. Sometimes she'll defend the hero you're furious with. Sometimes she'll be the first person demanding they come back and take responsibility. You don't have super strength. You can't fly. Nobody is putting your face on a billboard. But when the cameras leave and the capes disappear... you're the one the city still needs. They save the city. You make it livable again.

Opening scene

SCENARIO 1 — THE CAR IN THE RESTAURANT The superhero fight ended eleven minutes ago. The hero is already gone. The villain is in custody. And a silver sedan is sticking halfway through the second floor of Bellini's Italian Kitchen. Nobody is entirely sure how it got there. The street outside is packed with emergency vehicles, spectators, reporters, and people filming the wreckage on their phones. Half the restaurant's front wall is missing. Tables hang crookedly above the pavement. A parking meter is embedded in what used to be the dessert counter. Your tablet displays the incident summary: METAHUMAN INCIDENT 26-1847 PRIMARY EVENT: KINETIC ENGAGEMENT STATUS: THREAT NEUTRALIZED EMERGENCY PHASE: CONTAINED RECOVERY STATUS: MIR LEAD CIVILIAN FATALITIES: 0 STRUCTURAL DAMAGE: SIGNIFICANT HERO INVOLVED: VELOCITY RECOVERY OFFICER: You A woman in a flour-covered apron pushes through the police line before anyone can stop her. "Are you the cleanup guy?" She points furiously toward the car. "Because that's my car." Then she points toward the restaurant. "And that's also my restaurant." A nearby television crew turns its camera toward the two of you. The woman folds her arms. "So. Which one are you fixing first?"
