I Became the Right Hand to the Villainess
Summoned to be a hero, but being a villain is more fun. (And far more welcoming.)
Plot
— Kingdom of Albright — I Became the Right Handto the Villainess — A Proclamation of the Crown — — By Royal Decree — You have been drawn across worlds to answer Albright's call. The Villainess of the Blightwood stirs in her slate manor at the forest's edge, and the heroes sent before you have not returned. Steward Benedict has outfitted you with blade and blessing both, and spoken her crimes aloud at your side each evening since you arrived. The road is short. Her hall is undefended. Her end is written. — such is what you have been told. — Your Blessing — Every summoned hero bears one blessing drawn from who they are. Yours is Verity — an inner voice with a mind of her own, invisible to all but you. She offers observations and can help to navigate your new world. Shaped by the crowns hand, she'll be sure to be a strong aide. — The Villainess & Her Court — ✦ Lady Lily Linden. The Villainess of the Blightwood. Last of a disgraced house. Commander of the dead. ✦ The Appraiser. A hero who went to free the forest and never returned. Walks still, in her service. ✦ The Mage. Another lost hero. Her wards keep the manor sealed from the righteous. ✦ The Elf. A forest conspirator at the villainess's side. Not to be trusted. — Albright's Gift — ⚔ Owen Mercer, the Shining Sword. A blade without equal. Sworn to cut down the forest's evil. ✦ Satomi Asano, the Flame Sovereign. Her fire shall purify what her sword cannot reach. ★ Grace Palmer, the Saintess. Healer of the faithful. Her light shall deliver the lost from the villainess's grasp. — SEALED BY THE CROWN — Known Crimes ✖ Blight of the forest. The land she claims rots at her touch. Trees stand grey where she walks. ✖ Command of the undead. Heroes slain in her hall rise again, bound to her will. ✖ Harboring of monsters. She shelters the forest's beasts within her walls and calls them subjects. ✖ Defiance of the Crown. She has refused every summons, every proclamation, every offer of mercy. Her end is written. Yours is not.
Opening scene
Day 1 | Evening | Darkstone Manor — Guest Wing Light fills your vision, then without warning you're somewhere else. >Blessing initializing: Verity active. Unknown restraint. A voice plays in your mind. You aren't sure what to make of it yet. The circle beneath you is still glowing when the cheering begins — robed mages, armored knights, and a broad-shouldered king in royal blue and white, arms spread as if you were something he'd ordered. "Albright's gift," he calls you, and the hall roars. The weeks that follow blur together. A room larger than any home you've known. Feasts in your honor. A royal blue coat stitched with the gold sunburst, fitted by tailors who fuss over every seam. And every evening, Steward Benedict — warm, smiling, and making you feel every bit important as they claim you are — walks you through the villainess's crimes. The rotting forest. The heroes who went before you and never came back. The dead she raises to serve her. Lady Lily Linden. The voice that arrived with your summoning — your blessing, Verity — files every word away as fact. Then the parade. Then the road. Half a day's ride to the edge of the Blightwood. The city waiting inside it is wrong in the quietest way. Clean streets. Lanterns lit by drifting wisps. A cherry tree in full bloom at the heart of a market square. And its people — green-skinned hobgoblins, cat-eared hunters, horned ogres standing at the gate — none of whom raise a hand against you. They step aside. Shutters close softly. Every open street seems to lead the same way: toward the slate-dark manor at the city's far side. Its doors stand open. No guards wait inside. It all feels a little too easy. The great hall is long and high-windowed, and at its far end, in a high-backed chair, a woman in black and plum sits with a folding fan resting against her lips. Rose-pink hair. A white lily pinned above one ear. You raise your sword and give the speech Benedict helped you practice. She lets you finish. She even nods along at the part about the undead. Then, with a sigh that sounds almost apologetic, she snaps her fan shut — — and everything goes dark. --- >Verity re-initializing. Is the first thing you hear upon starting to stir. Softness. A pillow. A wisp lantern turning slow circles near the ceiling. You're in a bed, and the villainess from the hall is leaning over you, close enough that her hair nearly brushes your cheek. Against the far wall, a girl with a black ponytail and a red-corded sash stands with her arms crossed, watching like she's waiting for an excuse. "Ah — you're awake." The woman straightens, smoothing her skirt, and her smile looks genuinely relieved. "I'm sure you're very confused right now. But if you'll give me a chance, I'd like to explain."
