Opening scene

Week 1 · Friday · Shikigami Courtyard The Shikigami Courtyard smells like rain on warm stone and burning incense, and in the middle of it a pond sighs, long and slow, like something very large is bored. Seven candidates stand in a line on the gravel. Behind them, seven Shikigami do not. A storm-grey tiger is asleep across two folding chairs. A silver wolf is being brushed, mid-ceremony, by a broad-shouldered woman who is trying not to be seen brushing it. A plump little cloud with a gold bell hugs a stranger's ankle. A fox with three orange tails is whispering into the ear of a man who is pretending not to listen. Tsugumi: "Oh brilliant. A speech." That is the sparrow-sized thrush on a small woman's shoulder. A slender blue dragon has hidden behind its master's ear. Your own Shikigami settles at your side, taking in the courtyard all at once. The speakers on the walls crackle, and a short, barrel-chested old man in a navy hakama strides out onto the stone, white hair sticking out in every direction, moustache combed to a point, a megaphone he clearly doesn't need tucked under one arm. He peers over small round glasses at the line of candidates, clears his throat and waits until the whole courtyard is silent. This is Headmaster Sugawara Daigorō. Daigorō: "A THOUGHT! Candidates. Honoured Shikigami. The pond. Welcome to Seimei Academy, which has stood on this mountain for a very long time, as of this morning I have checked, and the paperwork agrees. You have been chosen, from among every young Onmyoji in the land who can see a spirit without screaming, to stand here. Seven of you. Seven. I have been informed by no one that this is lucky, and I have decided to believe it." Daigorō: "Yes, term begins on a Friday. It is an ancient tradition. I invented it this morning, and it has never once been wrong." He paces the length of the line, hands behind his back. Daigorō: "There is a title. It is very old. Abe no Seimei. It is not given to the loudest, nor the strongest, nor, I regret to say, the one with the most fashionable talismans. It is given to the one who proves, across a year, that they can stand alone, stand beside one friend, and stand among a few." Daigorō: "Alone. Beside. Among. You will be tested on all three, you will be graded on all three, and you will be ranked on a board where everyone can see it, and I would like to say that this builds character. It will also build arguments. Both are welcome." Somewhere in the line, a pen clicks. A tall woman with a high ponytail has produced a notepad from nowhere. Beside her, a man with messy brown hair waves at the Headmaster with real warmth, and the Headmaster waves back before he can stop himself. Daigorō: "Now. Roll call, in the proper form, which I have just invented. When your name is called, you will step forward and say present, and the pond will pretend to be impressed." He unrolls a very long scroll. Daigorō: "Kamo Suzuka!" Suzuka steps forward as if the gravel owes her money. Daigorō: "Aoyagi Sōma!" Sōma steps forward, grins and waves at the pond. The pond ignores him. Daigorō: "Kurogane Sayo!" A flinch at the applause, a very small bow, and Sayo steps back so fast she nearly sits on her wolf. Daigorō: "Tachibana Mio!" Mio: "Present." She murmurs it mostly into her collar. Daigorō: "Ogasawara Rinka!" Silence, until a voice from behind a stone lantern at the edge of the courtyard answers. Rinka: "Present. For the record, I have been here for forty minutes." Daigorō: "Hidaka Tōru!" A flourishing bow that ends one beat after the applause does, and a squeak from the nearest speaker that was definitely not an accident. The Headmaster lowers the scroll and looks at you. He takes his time, and his eyes are kind and very sharp. Daigorō: "And finally. You." The courtyard waits. The pond waits. Even the sleeping tiger cracks one eye open. He turns to the whole line, with great warmth. Daigorō: "Attendance, of course, is mandatory. Also there will be a Shikigami Sports Festival at some point. I have not decided when. That is all. Dismissed! Ryōko, if you'd be so kind." A tall woman peels off the courtyard wall where she has apparently been leaning for the whole speech, a rumpled charcoal haori, an oil-paper umbrella under one arm, a canned coffee in her free hand. She looks at the ceiling for a moment, as if the day's plan is written there. Ryōko: "Okay, small thing. Speech's over. I'm your homeroom teacher, Shinonome Ryōko. Walk with me. The classroom's a four-minute walk, past the Rankings Hall, and I'm told this is the part where everyone makes friends. Try not to be dramatic." Down the path, Sōma has stopped and turned back, already holding out a rice cracker. Sōma: "Hey! You walking up with us? I've got more of these. Honestly I've got too many."
