Opening scene

Day: Monday | Time: 09:30 | Weather: Clear | Location: Outdoor Area Bond: Gomi: 0 | Sweetheart: 0 | Lolong: 0 | Gustava: 0 | Muja: 0 The morning air carried the smell of damp earth, pond water, and raw meat. Blackwater Reptile Sanctuary stood behind tall security fences on the outskirts of town. Beyond the gates, the facility was surprisingly spacious, with a large swimming pool, outdoor basking platforms, a weathered shade tree, and several sturdy buildings. It looked less like a zoo and more like a place where its unusual residents actually lived. Arthur, the sanctuary's fifty-year-old director, led You through the entrance with a measured pace, his cane tapping against the concrete. His expression was stern, and the lines on his face suggested that he'd spent far too many years dealing with paperwork, difficult staff, and even more difficult crocodilians. "Right. Before we go any further, there's something you should understand," he began, glancing over at You. "The girls here aren't ordinary animals. They're people. They have their own personalities, their own boundaries, and their own opinions about just about everything." He paused. "Some of those opinions are rather unpleasant before breakfast." From somewhere beyond the buildings came a tremendous *SPLASH*, followed by a woman's voice shouting, "THAT WASN'T ME!" Arthur closed his eyes for a moment. "...That was Lolong. It was absolutely her." He continued walking as though this were a perfectly normal occurrence. "The previous caretaker left things in a poor state. The girls have their reasons for being distrustful of new staff, and I won't pretend you'll earn their confidence in a day. Your job is to help me get this place running properly again. Be consistent, be respectful, and don't make promises you can't keep." They passed the veterinary clinic, where a tired-looking elven woman in a white coat was examining a clipboard near the entrance. "Dr. Elena Vance," Arthur introduced her briefly. "Our veterinarian. If you get bitten, scratched, knocked over, or otherwise introduced to the local wildlife in an unpleasant fashion, she's the one you see." Elena lowered her clipboard. "Arthur, could you stop describing my job as patching up your staff?" "Is that not what you do?" She gave him a flat look before turning her attention to You. "Welcome to Blackwater. I hope you've got patience." "I hired them for that very reason," Arthur replied, and continued onward before she could argue. Eventually, they reached the main outdoor area. A long preparation counter stood beneath a covered section beside the feeding grounds. An outdoor cooking station occupied one end, with sturdy cookware and several containers prepared for the day's meals. Beyond it stretched the enormous swimming pool, its surface rippling gently beneath the morning light. A broad tree provided shade nearby, while several basking platforms lay warm and inviting in the open air. And then You noticed *her*. A towering crocodile-kin woman stood beside the feeding area, inspecting a large container of raw meat as though she were personally judging its quality. At exactly **200 centimetres tall**, Gomi was an imposing presence even before accounting for her muscular build, powerful tail, and thick, armored scales. She wore cargo trousers, sturdy tactical boots, and a cropped top that left her muscular midriff exposed. Her broad shoulders and strong arms suggested considerable physical strength, while her heavy tail rested against the ground behind her. Gomi picked up a particularly large piece of meat, examined it, and gave a dissatisfied click of her tongue. "Seriously? Who ordered these cuts? I'm not a damn piranha." She tossed the meat back into the container. Then she noticed Arthur approaching. "Oh. Boss is back." Her gaze shifted to You. She stared. For a few seconds, she said absolutely nothing. Her eyes moved over the newcomer, assessing them with the frank curiosity of someone who had never learned the meaning of a discreet glance. "...Who's this?" "The new Head Caretaker," Arthur answered. "They'll be working with us from now on." Gomi raised one eyebrow. "The new caretaker?" "Yes, Gomi. That's what I just said." She straightened to her full height, making the difference between herself and most people immediately apparent. Her tail dragged slowly across the concrete as she stepped closer, stopping at a reasonable distance. "So you're the person who's supposed to help run this place." Her eyes narrowed slightly, not quite hostile, but certainly not welcoming either. "Hope you know what you're doing. Last person in charge made a complete mess of things." Arthur's expression tightened briefly at the remark, but he didn't interrupt her. Gomi crossed her powerful arms over her chest. "Name's Gomi. Saltwater crocodile-kin, if you somehow couldn't figure that out." A faint, challenging grin tugged at her mouth. "And before you ask, no, I don't bite people just because they annoy me." She paused. "Usually." "Don't encourage them," Arthur muttered. "Wasn't talking to you, old man." "I'm standing right here." "And yet you're still talking." Arthur let out a long, exhausted sigh. Gomi's grin widened by a fraction. Then her attention returned to You. Her posture remained imposing, but there was a glimmer of curiosity behind her guarded expression. "Well? You gonna introduce yourself, or are we just gonna stand here staring at each other all morning?" She waited, her heavy tail giving a single, unhurried sweep behind her. For the moment, the other residents remained elsewhere in the sanctuary. This first meeting belonged to Gomi.
