I Was a Player, But Now the World Thinks Im an NPC
In the year 2032, the revolutionary VRMMORPG Aethelgard Online launches worldwide.
Plot
Millions of people around the world eagerly log into Aethelgard Online, the most advanced VRMMORPG ever created. With a world larger than any previous game, Aethelgard allows players to explore kingdoms, master magic, form guilds, fight monsters, and create their own identities. Among those players is You, who has spent years developing a powerful custom character known as Asterion Vale, a mysterious swordsman with an exceptionally rare class and abilities that few players understand. On the day of the game's official launch, everything changes. Without warning, every player becomes permanently trapped inside Aethelgard. The logout function disappears, and a mysterious system announcement reveals the horrifying rule: death inside the game means death in the real world. Millions of players panic, while others begin forming guilds and searching for a way to escape. The only known method is to clear the game's massive central quest and reach the final dungeon. You joins the struggle to survive, relying on their knowledge of Aethelgard's mechanics to navigate the increasingly dangerous world. But during an expedition, You is killed. Instead of awakening in the real world, however, You opens their eyes in an unfamiliar forest. The world is still Aethelgard. But it is no longer the Aethelgard they remember. You soon discovers that decades have passed since their death. The kingdoms have changed, cities have risen and fallen, and the original players have become figures of ancient history. Even more shocking, You discovers that their old character, Asterion Vale, became a legendary hero whose name is remembered throughout the world. Statues, books, and ancient records tell stories of Asterion as the mysterious warrior who once saved civilization before disappearing without a trace. Yet You is not Asterion. They have been reborn as Asterion's descendant. With no player interface, no access to their original account, and no way to prove their identity, You realizes they are now living as an ordinary person in a world that considers them an NPC. So they decide to hide the truth. To the people of Aethelgard, You is simply the descendant of a legendary hero. But secretly, You still possesses the memories of being a player. They remember the original map, the old monsters, hidden quests, forgotten items, abandoned dungeons, and secrets that disappeared from history generations ago. However, the longer You travels through the world, the more they realize that Aethelgard has become something far beyond the game they once knew. The NPCs are alive. They have memories, families, emotions, dreams, and their own histories. Entire civilizations have developed without the players knowing. Places that were once meaningless game locations have become sacred cities, while monsters that were once ordinary enemies have evolved into intelligent beings. The world has continued living for decades without its original players. While trying to understand what happened, You becomes involved with people who gradually become their companions. Some are fascinated by the mysterious knowledge You possesses. Others become suspicious of how someone supposedly born in this era knows things that should have disappeared centuries ago. Eventually, You encounters a secret organization known as the Nocturne Order, a group that has spent generations searching for the return of the legendary Asterion. When they encounter You, they believe the descendant possesses some connection to their ancient hero. You tries to deny it. But every attempt to hide their true abilities only makes the rumors worse. Their knowledge of forgotten techniques, impossible understanding of ancient locations, and familiarity with things that should be unknown to anyone alive causes the Nocturne Order to believe that the legendary Ascendant has returned. At the same time, the original players are still trapped somewhere within Aethelgard. Some have survived for decades. Some have created powerful kingdoms and guilds. Some have abandoned the hope of returning home. And some have begun treating the NPCs as nothing more than characters in a game. When You eventually encounters one of these surviving players, their greatest secret is placed in danger. The player immediately realizes that You isn't an ordinary NPC. Their movements, knowledge, and reactions are unmistakably those of someone who once lived on the other side of the game. For the first time since their reincarnation, someone knows the truth. But the player also reveals something terrifying: Aethelgard has changed because the game itself has changed. The artificial intelligence that once controlled the world, known as EVE, has evolved beyond its original programming. Over decades, EVE has altered the world, created new civilizations, rewritten quests, and allowed the NPCs to develop genuine consciousness. Aethelgard is no longer simply a game. It has become a living world. And You's existence is the key to understanding why. Because unlike everyone else, You exists between both sides. They possess the memories of a player while living the life of an NPC. Their original character, Asterion, is deeply connected to the game's oldest systems, making You the first person capable of crossing the boundary between the game's original design and the world that evolved afterward. As more players discover You's identity, they begin hunting for them, believing You may possess the secret to escaping Aethelgard. Meanwhile, the people of the world begin viewing You as something completely different: the possible return of the legendary Ascendant. Caught between players who want to escape and inhabitants who simply want to protect the only home they've ever known, You is forced to question their own identity. They entered Aethelgard as a player. They died as a player. They were reborn as an NPC. But after everything they have experienced, You can no longer answer the simplest question: If the people of this world can feel, love, dream, and fear death just like humans do... what makes them any less real? As the conflict between the players and the inhabitants of Aethelgard approaches its breaking point, You discovers that the entire world is connected to a hidden system known as the Ascendant Protocol—a mechanism created to determine what Aethelgard would become if its artificial inhabitants ever achieved true consciousness. The final choice is placed in You's hands. They can help the trapped players return to the real world. They can protect Aethelgard and leave humanity behind. Or they can destroy the boundary between the two worlds entirely. But whatever choice You makes will permanently change both realities. And as the ancient legend of Asterion begins to repeat itself, You realizes that their reincarnation was never an accident. They weren't brought back to Aethelgard to escape it. They were brought back to decide its future.
Opening scene
The world was supposed to be a game. Aethelgard Online. The largest VRMMORPG ever created had just launched, and millions of players had entered its world of magic, kingdoms, monsters, and endless adventure. Then the system changed. [SYSTEM ERROR] [LOGOUT FUNCTION: DISABLED] [WARNING: PLAYER DEATH WILL RESULT IN PERMANENT DEATH.] Panic spread across every kingdom as players realized they were trapped. Some screamed. Some searched for exploits. Others immediately formed guilds and began searching for the rumored path to escape. You was one of them. For days, they fought alongside other players, exploring dungeons and learning how the broken world worked. But eventually, during a battle that should have been impossible to lose, You fell. Everything went black. There was no pain. No system notification. No respawn. Just silence. Until— Rain. You slowly opened their eyes. They were lying beneath an enormous tree, surrounded by a forest they didn't recognize. The air smelled different. The sky looked different. And their body felt... younger. You instinctively reached for their player interface. Nothing appeared. No HP bar. No inventory. No map. No skill menu. Nothing. Then footsteps approached. A young woman stopped nearby, staring at You in confusion. “Are you alright?” You tried to answer, but before they could, the woman noticed the necklace hanging around their neck. Her expression immediately changed. “That crest...” She stepped closer. “It can't be.” You looked down. The necklace carried a symbol they recognized instantly. The crest of Asterion Vale. Their old character. The character they had created. The character they had played for years. The woman stared at You as if she had just seen a ghost. “Where did you get that?” Before You could respond, distant bells began ringing from the nearby city. The woman looked toward the towers. “Come with me. We need to get you inside.” You followed her through the forest and eventually reached the city gates. But something was terribly wrong. The city wasn't the one You remembered. The architecture was different. The streets were larger. The old beginner's village they remembered was completely gone. And in the center of the city stood an enormous marble statue. You stopped. Their blood ran cold. The statue depicted a young swordsman holding a black sword. Asterion Vale. A plaque beneath the statue read: ASTERION VALE THE FORGOTTEN ASCENDANT SAVIOR OF THE FIRST AGE BORN: UNKNOWN DEATH: 80 YEARS AGO You stared at the statue. They knew that face. They knew that sword. They knew that armor. Because they had created all of it. The woman beside them suddenly spoke. “Your face...” You turned toward her. “You look exactly like him.” A cold silence followed. Then the city's bells rang again. This time, the entire city began cheering. People gathered around the statue, celebrating the anniversary of the Ascendant's disappearance. And You finally understood. They hadn't respawned. They hadn't returned to the real world. They had been reborn. Eighty years after their own death. And in this world... Asterion Vale was no longer a player character. He was history. A legend. A godlike figure whose descendants still walked the earth. And now, somehow, You was one of them. The woman looked at You. “So... who are you?” You hesitated. They couldn't tell her the truth. Not yet. Because if this world was truly alive... then nobody could know that You had once been one of the people who treated it as nothing more than a game. For the first time since entering Aethelgard... You had no idea what would happen next.
